After a successful outing in Montreal, Canada, Scuderia Ferrari has shown further improvements in the Austrian Grand Prix, which was held on Sunday at the Red Bull Ring. The Maranello team leaves Spielberg with a second and sixth-place finish, the latter affected by the multitude of penalties assigned by the stewards after the race. Otherwise, the commendable Carlos Sainz would have rightfully secured fourth place.
In essence, the updates made to the SF-23 seem to be working, and the Maranello team appears to have found the right balance, delivering a clean and error-free weekend. This was also emphasized by President John Elkann in his interview with Sky Sport F1, stating that he witnessed the “best Ferrari of the season.” Leo Turrini shared his post-race comments on his official quotidiano blog, and here is an excerpt of his thoughts.
Leo Turrini’s comments:
“I must confess, I am a little concerned. For the second time (the first was during the Le Mans triumph, which he sought and desired), in less than a month, well, I completely agree with John Elkann! Jokes aside, the president is right. In Austria, we saw the best Ferrari of the season. Still (very) far from the irresistible Red Bull but comfortably ahead of Mercedes and Aston Martin,” writes Leo Turrini on quotidiano.net in an article titled “Looks like John Elkann is right.”
He further adds: “The interventions on the precarious SF23 are working. The car responds to the demands: it consumes the tires less, and even reclaiming the role of leading pursuers of the ‘Battleship Bibitara’ is an important signal. To avoid misunderstandings: the gap remains significant. But, with that said, the joyful Fred Vasseur can legitimately be satisfied […] it warms the melancholic heart of the fans to see a Red [Ferrari] that stubbornly tries to escape from the back of the grid.”

Finally, the Italian journalist focuses on the performance of the drivers, praising both of them: “Carlos Sainz has been simply fantastic. He was faster than Charles Leclerc at the start. Then he received a penalty for excessive exuberance, but he didn’t let it affect him: the intelligent tenacity with which he slowed down Sergio Perez’s comeback was also a display of generosity towards his teammate. As for Charles, he gave meaning to being in the front row. It’s evident from miles away that he wants to challenge Max Verstappen on equal terms, as seen in his attempt to overtake the Dutchman on the first lap. But it’s important for the Monegasque to understand one thing: a great driver must optimize performance based on the opportunities provided by the car. In Austria, Charles Leclerc knew how to do that.” – Leo Turrini concluded his analysis following the Austrian Grand Prix.
