From Sergio Perez’s first victory to Charles Leclerc’s disappointment: Italian sports journalist and author Leo Turrini, one of Italy’s leading Formula 1 experts, was interviewed by Calciomercato.com to share his shares his thoughts on the events which took place in the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend. The well-known Formula 1 expert journalist focused in particular on Ferrari’s diasastrous strategy, comparing it to an own goal.
Below are some of Leo Turrini’s most important comments and statements regarding the Monte Carlo race:
“What did Ferrari do in Monte Carlo?!? I suspected that Max Allegri was in fact in charge of the Ferrari pit wall. If you start first and second in Monaco and finish second and fourth without running into accidents, in short, it means that you have made a mistake with the strategy. When Sergio Perez, the Mexican from Red Bull, stopped to fit the intermediate tires, it was right to ask Carlos Sainz to copy his choice. But when the Spaniard refused, saying on the radio that the track was drying away, it was absurd to stop Charles Leclerc”.
On Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz
“Carletto was first, yes he could wait for dry weather. Instead he was forced to make two close stops. He was first, he finished off the podium. An own goal like Radu in Bologna-Inter. I want to add that Carlos Sainz needs to understand that he has to help Charles Leclerc. The way he did things in Monaco was not right, even if his intuition was right.”
On the title fight
“If nothing else in Montecarlo, Perez and not Verstappen triumphed, but the people of Maranello wasted a huge opportunity. Resignation? No, let’s take an example from Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho. What do they have to do with it? Well, Ancelotti after the poor results with Napoli and Everton was considered “done like mashed trotters” as they say in my parts. And Mou after United and Tottenham seemed more like a fool than a bench guru. Instead between Tirana and Paris we witnessed both of them celebrating. Never say never in life”.
