The 2021 Monaco Grand Prix gave Scuderia Ferrari a bitter-sweet Sunday afternoon. On the Principality track, the Maranello team scored its first podium of the 2021 Formula 1 season with Carlos Sainz, who finished second under the checkered flag at the end of a splendid weekend, which with a little more luck on Saturday could even lead him to victory on the streets of Monte Carlo. However, the retirement of Charles Leclerc, who should have started from pole position and who, on the other hand, was not even able to take part in the home race, weighs heavily on Ferrari’s weekend.
Speaking to Sky Sport F1, the Italian side’s team principal wanted to underline the positive aspects that emerged from this weekend. Above all, the newfound speed of the SF21 and the great harmony that seems to be exist in the team. “The team remained very united even last year in the difficulties. Those who lived it from inside could feel the right spirit – explained Mattia Binotto – the choice of the driver, Carlos, was a further step. It was something to amalgamate a solid group. I am very pleased, he gets along well with Charles and it is all very positive in this sense. We have to learn from mistakes, this time we made one – the Ferrari boss admitted at the end of the race, in reference to Charles Leclerc’s problem – making mistakes is fine, but then you have to try to understand the solution to ensure that they don’t happen again in the future.”
“Obviously this weekend we had the potential to win – concluded Mattia Binotto, highlighting the improvements of the SF21 – and nobody expected this, not even us. But the car is growing. It goes in the right direction. From the wind tunnel and the simulator we knew we could do well here. We did not think we would be able to win, but we know we could do well, yes.”
