The FIA has confirmed an important change within its Formula 1 race control structure, appointing Paul Burns as deputy race director. He will work alongside current race director Rui Marques, ensuring operational continuity following the departure of Claire Dubbelman, who left the federation at the start of 2026 to join the Saudi Arabian Automobile and Motorcycle Federation.
Extensive experience across junior categories
Paul Burns, originally from Northern Ireland, brings with him a wealth of experience from various levels of motorsport. Up until 2025, he served as assistant race director in Formula 2, while also being involved in Formula 4 and Formula Regional championships. His career also includes experience at prestigious events such as the Macau Grand Prix, further strengthening his credentials within the FIA structure.
In addition to his race control duties, Burns previously worked within Formula One Management as part of the timing team, contributing to the official confirmation of Grand Prix results. Before that, he spent several years working in timing operations across multiple circuits in the United Kingdom and Ireland, building a solid technical foundation in race operations.
He officially joined the FIA in 2023, initially taking on operational roles within Formula 1 before focusing on junior categories. This progression has now led to his promotion to deputy race director at a particularly important phase for the sport.
Claire Dubbelman explains her departure
Claire Dubbelman, who had been a key figure within the FIA for nearly a decade, shared the reasons behind her decision to leave in a message posted on Instagram. “After nearly a decade at the FIA, I felt I had reached a point where I had made the most of every opportunity available within the organization,” she wrote.
“This move is not about leaving the FIA, but about taking on a role in a new environment that challenges me at the next level. It gives me a perspective to contribute to and develop the sport in a way that I did not see possible in my previous role. I am genuinely excited to be in Saudi Arabia, and there are so many opportunities here.”
Continuity at a key stage for Formula 1
The appointment of Paul Burns comes at a crucial time for Formula 1, as the championship continues to adapt to new technical regulations and increasing competitive intensity. Ensuring stability within race control is essential, particularly as teams and drivers demand consistency and clarity in decision-making.
With his strong background in race operations, timing systems, and junior category management, Burns is expected to provide valuable support to Rui Marques. His promotion reflects the FIA’s intention to maintain continuity while also strengthening its internal structure for the challenges ahead.
