Ferrari Racing Director Laurent Mekies gives verdict on the Maranello team’s qualifying speed at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas. On their first run in Q3, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz set times of 1’34”624 and 1’34”783. On their second runs, they both improve and Carlos set a time of 1’34”356 to secure pole position for the United States Grand Prix with Charles second in 1’34”421. It was the Spaniard’s third career pole, which puts him alongside José Froilan Gonzalez, Giuseppe Farina, Chris Amon and Nigel Mansell on the list of Ferrari polesitters.
Here are the comments of Laurent Mekies after the qualifying session for the 2022 United States Grand Prix:
First a word for Dietrich, he had a vision for motorsport, and brought a huge legacy to the sport. I was lucky enough to work for Toro Rosso for many years. Thinking of his family and Red Bull today
“Part of our strength to perform over one timed lap, we sometimes pay for it in the race. Our weaknesses are exposed when tyres are more used in the race. We are trying to keep the advantage during the race. Carlos’ strong point has been the race. Meanwhile Charles does extraordinary things in qualifying. Carlos did a very good job today. It’s his second pole and he has been very very close for a few races.”

“Globally we may have been weaker in the race compared to qualifying. If you look back at the races & remove the reliability issues and the mistakes we have done, you will find that quite a few times we would have had a good enough tyre management to win the race. However it’s true that our package is very good at extracting the potential of the tyres on a single lap, it’s a characteristics of our package that is making us a little bit less competitive in long stints. What is sure is that we are using the last four races to build for next year. There is never going to be only a single reason, we work on ten different aspects. Tomorrow is another important test to see if we are heading in the right direction or not.” – Ferrari Racing Director Laurent Mekies said, after the qualifying session at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas.
