As we approach the conclusion of the season, the top 5 drivers for both most overtakes and most times overtaken are outlined below. Sergio Perez comfortably leads the ‘overtakes championship’ this season, seemingly on track to claim the 1 million jellybeans prize suggested by Sebastian Vettel back in 2021. The competition for the most overtaken driver this season is closely contested, with Hulkenberg at 96, Bottas at 92, and Magnussen at 91. Notably, these totals exclude sprint races, maintaining consistency with previous years.
The 2023 event effectively dispelled any concerns about the Las Vegas track’s ability to generate overtaking opportunities. The presence of four extended straights leading into substantial braking zones created numerous chances for overtaking in this race. An essential element contributing to exciting racing was the interconnected nature of these passing opportunities, making it challenging for drivers to break the tow. The stretch between T5 and T9 was the only segment where a driver could genuinely establish a gap. Consequently, there was significantly less field spread than usual, leading to heightened competition among drivers. The two safety cars, especially the first one that reintegrated drivers involved in the initial corner incident, aided overtaking. The unique challenge of colder conditions and a green track with no support races may have played a role, although the temperature differential wasn’t substantially greater than what Silverstone and Nurburgring have experienced in the past. While 99 overtakes might be considered an outlier, it’s reasonable to expect that the Las Vegas circuit will consistently deliver compelling racing, primarily due to the interconnected overtaking opportunities that make breaking the tow difficult.
Hamilton secured the most overtakes in this race with 15, also marking the highest by any driver in a single race this season. Zhou, on the other hand, found himself as the most overtaken driver with 13, achieving the highest-ever total for a debut F1 race and the 6th highest number of overtakes of all time.
