“The Ferrari drivers fought each other“. This is how Max Verstappen commented on a rather easy Sprint win for the Dutchman, who confirms himself as the race specialist on Saturday with his third personal victory out of the five Sprint races that have so far defined the starting grid for as many F1 Grand Prixs.
Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were actually involved in a great battle – a very correct one. But in Ferrari this is a confrontation that was also seen in the last round of the 2022 Formula 1 season, in Canada, which has allowed Max Verstappen to gain a solid advantage in front of the World championship.
Today the Red Bull driver was able to break away from the DRS of Charles Leclerc, to gain about 3 ″ of margin, an advantage that proved unbridgeable for Charles Leclerc, who in the first kilometers aimed to save tires in order to attack Max Verstappen at the end of the Sprint race. This tactic was successfully used by the Dutchman in Imola.
The Monegasque in the post-Sprint interview stressed that tomorrow he hopes to experience a calmer and not so lively start to the race in terms of internal struggle with Carlos Sainz, who in turn has instead emphasized strategy as the only weapon to actually attack the championship leader in tomorrow’s Grand Prix.
Lapo Elkann, brother of Ferrari President John and a big fan of the Maranello team, underlined on Twitter the importance of the collaboration between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz: “Well done, Charles and Carlos, tomorrow with teamwork and racing as a united team you can aim high”. – he posted on social media.
