In these three years in Formula 1 at the helm of McLaren, Lando Norris has shown a clear increase in performance and maturity, being able to match the performances of much more experienced teammates, such as Carlos Sainz and now Daniel Ricciardo.
In the last grand prix, the one held in Sochi, the young British driver got his first pole position of his career and only a wrong decision on the timing of a return to the pits to use the Intermediate tires deprived him of the probable first victory after just 53 races. But for now Lando Norris can be satisfied with the five podiums scored so far (four in the current championship) and for the fourth place in the drivers’ standings, ahead of Sergio Perez and just 12 points behind Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas.
And even at the level of recognition among the fans, Lando seems to have a particular grip among the younger public, who feel sympathy for the 21-year-old from Bristol, despite the fact that he does nothing to try to ruffle the public. “At the beginning of the year you always expect to take a step forward as a team, but also on a personal level I have improved a lot by reviewing everything that had happened the previous year to do better”, Lando Norris acknowledged in a recent interview for Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The McLaren driver was inevitably teased by the Italian media about a possible future with Scuderia Ferrari, but he was able answer making extensive use of diplomacy: “Currently I’m happy where I am and have just extended the contract with McLaren with which I want to win the World Championship, both the drivers and constructors titles. In 10 years, I don’t know, anything can happen: it’s true, I have many Italian fans and I was able to see this at Monza where they waited for me outside the hotel and at the circuit and I could feel their great appreciation for me.” – the McLaren driver concluded, as reported by the Italian media.
