Scuderia Ferrari Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen has explained the unfortunate incident which took place at the Bahrain Grand Prix, leading to his retirement. The 2007 Formula One world champion was called into the pits on the 37th lap as he looked for a quick tyre change. However, disaster struck just seconds later as he was shown a green light to leave without all of his new wheels attached, as the rear left tyre then came loose as he sped off and he ran over the leg of one of his team members.
The Fin stopped just meters later after he realised the devastated left in his wake. Scuderia Ferrari have since confirmed that the mechanic was rushed to hospital and suffered a double break. Kimi Raikkonen was evidently gutted at the incident and explained that it was a mistake with the lights which caused such horrific scenes: “I don’t know what shape he is in. For sure, not great for him.” – Kimi Raikkonen said, as reported by the British media – “I go when the light is green. I don’t see what happens behind and unfortunately he got hurt. My job is to go when the light is green. I don’t know more than that and hopefully he is OK.” – Kimi explained.
The Finnish driver retired from the race following the collision. Kimi’s team-mate and race winner Sebastian Vettel said: “I am a bit sad as I think in the pit-stop with Kimi one of our mechanics got injured, so send him my best regards. It’s a mixed day.”
Ferrari has confirmed the Formula 1 mechanic who was hit by Kimi Raikkonen’s car in the botched pitstop at the Bahrain Grand Prix has suffered a broken leg. The pitcrew member was tasked with fitting a new left rear tyre to Raikkonen’s car but, following a problem with the removal of the wheel already on it, he was still in position and had not moved when Raikkonen was released. The mechanic was thrown to the ground, and was immediately attended to by paramedics before being taken to the track’s medical centre.
