2007 Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen is staying quiet about his next move in Formula 1, but according to Swiss German-language daily newspaper ‘Blick’, Kimi has already made his decision to continue as his option was running out on 15 September. The announcement will arrive after Sochi. While Mick Schumacher will drive the C39 in FP1 at the Nürburgring and is set to partner Kimi in Alfa’s line-up for the 2021 Formula 1 season. The team might use the free practice sessions as an opportunity to test Mick Schumacher‘s ability. And it being a home race for the Schumacher family, it could be the ideal introduction in F1 for Mick.
Some calculations show that Sochi is Kimi Raikkonen’s 326th race weekend, matching Rubens Barrichello’s all-time record. But if he retires at the end of the year, the returning Fernando Alonso would then pass them both to become the most experienced F1 driver in history.
“I’m not going to continue just to stop Alonso from doing more races than me,” Raikkonen laughed. “The number doesn’t mean that much to me anyway. Every record is broken at some stage.”
It is a typical sentiment by the popular Finn, who according to rumours had an option to remain at Alfa Romeo in 2021 which expired on September 15.
