Andrea Kimi Antonelli has welcomed the growing support he is receiving from Italian Formula 1 fans while acknowledging Ferrari’s unique place in the country’s motorsport culture. The Mercedes driver leads the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ standings, with Ferrari still challenging for both World Championships and creating an unusual division among Italian supporters.
Some fans are celebrating the success of the Bologna-born driver, while others remain focused exclusively on the Prancing Horse. Antonelli does not appear troubled by that contrast and believes the support behind him is continuing to grow as he prepares for what could be a memorable home Grand Prix at Monza.
Kimi Antonelli respects Ferrari’s place in Formula 1 history
Discussing how Italian fans are divided between supporting him and remaining loyal to Ferrari, Antonelli recognised the extraordinary influence of the Maranello marque.
“Ferrari is huge; it is a brand that is the history of Formula 1,” Andrea Kimi Antonelli told FormulaPassion.it.
The Mercedes driver explained that he fully understood why many Italian supporters naturally placed Ferrari first. However, he is also enjoying the increasing enthusiasm surrounding his own championship campaign.
“I understand it, but I’m happy with the support I have in Italy. It is growing more and more, and it is beautiful to see and experience,” he continued.
The situation has created an all-Italian sporting rivalry during a season in which Antonelli is leading the championship and the Scuderia remains involved in both title contests. Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur has nevertheless maintained a measured view of the team’s position in his 2026 mid-season assessment.
Antonelli expects a special atmosphere at the Italian Grand Prix
The contrast between Antonelli’s growing popularity and Ferrari’s traditional support could become particularly visible at Monza. The Italian Grand Prix is one of the most passionate weekends on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar, and the championship leader is already anticipating an exceptional reception.
“I can’t wait to race at Monza because I think it will be a truly special weekend. In my opinion, there will be a wonderful atmosphere because it is a weekend with so much passion,” Antonelli explained.
His home Grand Prix could nevertheless be complicated by a possible grid penalty. Toto Wolff recently indicated that Mercedes may need to introduce a new power unit for Antonelli, potentially forcing the team to decide whether to accept the sanction at Monza. The circumstances behind that difficult power-unit decision for Antonelli could have a major influence on his chances of fighting Ferrari in front of the Italian crowd.
If Mercedes avoids the penalty, the prospect of Antonelli battling the Ferrari drivers at the front would add another dimension to the atmosphere in the grandstands.
Italian rivalry has not produced hostility towards Antonelli
So far, the developing rivalry between Antonelli and Ferrari has not led to any unpleasant incidents. The Italian driver has previously explained that he has not received attacks from Ferrari supporters on social media.
That experience contrasts with the reaction he encountered from some Max Verstappen fans following the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, when Antonelli reported receiving online abuse. Despite the increasingly important championship contest, the domestic rivalry has therefore remained centred on sporting support rather than hostility.
Antonelli prefers a multi-team Formula 1 title fight
Kimi Antonelli is currently involved in two separate championship battles. The first is the internal Mercedes contest with team-mate George Russell, while the second involves the challenge posed by Ferrari and the other leading teams.
Although a championship decided exclusively between two Mercedes drivers could offer greater security, Antonelli would not choose to face Russell as his only rival.
“If you found yourself competing only against your team-mate, it would be a little different. It would mean the team was so dominant that, even if you did not beat him, you would still finish second and have no problems,” he explained.
For Antonelli, having Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull involved makes the competition more demanding but also more enjoyable. The presence of several competitive teams means even a small qualifying error can cost multiple grid positions rather than simply deciding the order between the two Mercedes cars.
“When several teams are fighting, however, it is more enjoyable. It is an extra challenge, but at the same time you have less margin for error because you know that if you make a small mistake in qualifying, instead of starting second you might start fourth, as Ferrari, McLaren or Red Bull can get between you depending on the weekend,” Kimi Antonelli concluded.
