Kimi Antonelli addresses potential Ferrari move after Mercedes future. Kimi Antonelli reflects on his rookie Formula 1 season.

Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), Kimi Antonelli (McLaren), 2025 F1

Kimi Antonelli has successfully completed his rookie Formula 1 campaign and is now firmly set to return to the grid in 2026, carrying valuable experience from a demanding first year at the highest level of motorsport. After an uneven mid-season phase, the young Italian managed to recover strongly, answering many of his critics with improved consistency and flashes of genuine performance during the latter stages of the championship.

Following a difficult summer period in which results and confidence dipped, Kimi Antonelli showed resilience by regaining momentum and finishing the season on a far more competitive note. In several races, he was able to apply real pressure to his Mercedes teammate George Russell, demonstrating that his raw speed and racecraft were beginning to translate more reliably into results.

From Mercedes’ perspective, the signs shown by Kimi Antonelli throughout 2025 offer plenty of encouragement. While comparisons were inevitable after he stepped into the seat vacated by Lewis Hamilton, it remains difficult to draw direct conclusions about whether the Italian has already reached the level of the seven-time World Champion. What is clear, however, is that Antonelli displayed the underlying pace required to justify Mercedes’ long-term faith in him.

As Formula 1 approaches a major regulation overhaul in 2026, Mercedes now carry the responsibility of continuing to provide Kimi Antonelli with the environment and support needed for further development. Should his upward trajectory continue, discussions around a longer-term contract extension would be a natural next step. At the same time, Kimi Antonelli will be aware that driving for a front-running team leaves little room for extended dips in form, especially after a period earlier in the season when he struggled to deliver results across multiple consecutive races.

Expectations rise as Antonelli reflects on Ferrari speculation

Despite his learning curve, former Formula 1 driver Marc Surer suggested that Kimi Antonelli may have had the most straightforward entry among the rookies, given that he joined a competitive Mercedes car. However, that advantage came with significantly higher expectations, particularly given the spotlight created by Lewis Hamilton’s departure and the pressure associated with driving for one of Formula 1’s most successful teams.

Looking ahead, the Italian has openly acknowledged that gaining more experience will be crucial in 2026 if he is to establish himself among the sport’s leading drivers. During an interview with Sky Italia, he was asked to address speculation surrounding a potential future move to Ferrari, a topic that naturally resonates with Italian fans who already support Charles Leclerc as one of the Scuderia’s leading figures.

Kimi Antonelli explained that while Ferrari represents one of the most iconic teams in Formula 1 and driving for the Scuderia would be special for any driver, his current focus remains firmly on Mercedes. He indicated that he is grateful for the opportunity the team has given him and that his immediate ambition is to pursue a World Championship with Mercedes before considering any long-term alternatives.

On track, Kimi Antonelli also gained valuable reference points by racing against some of Formula 1’s most established talents. He admitted that battling Oscar Piastri at close quarters produced a level of intensity similar to racing against Max Verstappen, underlining how intimidating it can be to see elite drivers filling the mirrors. However, having now proven to himself that he can fight at the front and realistically aim for podium finishes, Kimi Antonelli enters 2026 with growing confidence.

Why 2026 could be a breakthrough year for Kimi Antonelli

The upcoming regulation changes provide Mercedes with a major opportunity to reset after several seasons of frustration during the ground-effect era. Although the team remained competitive, they were rarely in a position to challenge consistently for championships, something that both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell experienced first-hand.

Mercedes are widely believed to be well prepared for the 2026 reset, particularly in comparison to rivals such as Red Bull, who are embarking on a new power unit project from scratch. This could place the Silver Arrows in a strong competitive position from the outset of the new era.

If that advantage materializes, Kimi Antonelli could find himself with a genuine chance to secure his first Formula 1 victory. With a full rookie season behind him, greater confidence in his own ability, and a potentially resurgent Mercedes package, 2026 shapes up as a defining year in the Italian’s rapidly developing Formula 1 career.
