Juan Pablo Montoya predicts Red Bull response as Lewis Hamilton faces fierce challenge at Silverstone
Former Formula 1 race winner Juan Pablo Montoya believes Lewis Hamilton could face one of his toughest weekends of the season despite returning to his most successful circuit. According to the Colombian, Red Bull will arrive at Silverstone determined to respond after narrowly missing out in Austria, making the British Grand Prix a crucial battle in the 2026 championship.
Lewis Hamilton heads into his home event carrying significant momentum after an impressive start to the weekend in the Ferrari SF-26. The seven-time world champion is aiming to secure a record-extending tenth victory at Silverstone, a circuit where he has consistently delivered some of the finest performances of his Formula 1 career.
However, the competition is expected to be exceptionally fierce. George Russell arrives full of confidence following his victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, while Lando Norris is hoping to repeat last year’s success in front of the British fans. At the same time, Max Verstappen and Red Bull are expected to be among Ferrari’s biggest threats throughout the weekend.
Juan Pablo Montoya expects Red Bull to respond after Austria disappointment
Looking ahead to the British Grand Prix, Juan Pablo Montoya suggested that Red Bull would approach the Silverstone weekend with extra motivation following the events of the previous race. In his view, the Milton Keynes-based team has every reason to come out fighting after feeling that it left Austria without the result it deserved.
The former Williams and McLaren driver argued that the circumstances surrounding the Austrian Grand Prix, including the outcome of qualifying and the race itself, would only increase Red Bull’s determination to bounce back immediately.
Montoya also highlighted the unique importance of Silverstone for several drivers on the grid. He believed the weekend carries enormous emotional value for Mercedes, whose factory is located just a short distance from the circuit, making success at the British Grand Prix particularly meaningful for the entire organisation.
He also suggested that Andrea Kimi Antonelli has a significant opportunity to make a statement. In Montoya’s opinion, defeating George Russell on home soil would represent a major psychological victory for the young Italian as he continues establishing himself within Mercedes.
Turning his attention to Ferrari, Montoya felt Silverstone could provide Charles Leclerc with an ideal opportunity to reduce the internal advantage currently enjoyed by Lewis Hamilton. While acknowledging that Lewis Hamilton has traditionally excelled at the British circuit, he believed Charles Leclerc possesses the speed to fight back if everything comes together during the weekend.
Despite recognising Lewis Hamilton’s remarkable record at Silverstone, Montoya warned that Red Bull should not be underestimated. He argued that the reigning champions are arriving with a clear determination to respond after Austria and could become even more competitive if straight-line performance and energy management prove decisive under the 2026 regulations.
Lewis Hamilton faces one of the strongest fields of the season
Silverstone has frequently been the stage for Lewis Hamilton’s greatest Formula 1 performances. The seven-time world champion has mastered the fast, flowing layout more successfully than any other driver, combining exceptional confidence through high-speed corners with the ability to extract maximum performance when it matters most.
Now driving for Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton has once again shown encouraging pace around his home circuit, giving the Scuderia genuine optimism that it can challenge for victory. Ferrari’s recent improvements in both straight-line speed and overall balance have transformed expectations compared to only a few races ago, placing the Italian team firmly in the fight at the front.
Nevertheless, the battle is expected to be extremely close. George Russell continues to demonstrate excellent form, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has rapidly become one of the standout performers of the season, while Max Verstappen remains a constant threat regardless of starting position. Lando Norris will also be eager to deliver another memorable result in front of his home supporters despite McLaren facing a more difficult period in recent races.
With Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull appearing closely matched, strategy, tyre management and battery deployment could prove just as important as outright pace. Silverstone’s combination of long straights and high-speed corners places unique demands on the 2026 cars, making energy management one of the defining factors throughout both the Sprint and the Grand Prix.
If Montoya’s prediction proves accurate, Lewis Hamilton may not only have to produce another classic Silverstone performance but also withstand a determined response from Red Bull, a team eager to erase the disappointment of Austria and return to the top step of the podium. The result could be one of the most competitive British Grand Prix weekends in recent memory, with Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull all capable of fighting for victory.
