Jolyon Palmer: Ferrari must not be underestimated against Mercedes in F1 2026 title fight. Mercedes may start F1 2026 as favourites, but growing paddock belief suggests Ferrari could mount a serious title challenge.

Mercedes may enter the 2026 Formula 1 season as early favourites for the world championship, yet growing voices inside the paddock suggest Ferrari should not be discounted in what could become a closely fought title battle.

The Scuderia endured a deeply disappointing 2025 campaign. The Maranello-based team failed to secure a single race victory and ultimately finished fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, well below expectations. As a result, team principal Fred Vasseur has been placed under increasing scrutiny, with mounting pressure to deliver a genuinely competitive package for Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton under the all-new 2026 regulations.

At the outset of the regulation reset, the prevailing assumption across the paddock was that Mercedes would once again hold a decisive advantage, particularly on the power unit side. With sweeping changes to the hybrid systems and energy deployment rules, many insiders believed the German manufacturer would emerge with the benchmark engine. However, Ferrari made a strategic decision to halt development of its 2025 car relatively early, redirecting significant resources toward the 2026 project. That long-term gamble now appears as though it could yield meaningful dividends for the Prancing Horse.

During pre-season testing in Bahrain, Ferrari attracted considerable attention after running what has been described within the paddock as an “unprecedented” exhaust solution. The innovative concept did not go unnoticed by rival teams, including McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, who was among those closely observing the Italian squad’s technical approach. Combined with a steady stream of aerodynamic updates and visible efforts to extract additional downforce, Ferrari’s development trajectory has prompted some insiders to reconsider the competitive order ahead of the new season.

Jolyon Palmer: Ferrari firmly in the 2026 F1 title conversation

Former Renault driver Jolyon Palmer addressed Ferrari’s prospects while analysing the opening day of testing at the Bahrain International Circuit for Sky Sports F1. Drawing on conversations with figures inside the Formula 1 paddock, Palmer indicated that there was a growing belief among several insiders that Ferrari should not be underestimated in the fight against Mercedes.

According to Palmer, feedback from within the paddock suggested that a number of team members and observers viewed Ferrari as a potential benchmark heading into 2026. While Mercedes continued to be regarded by many as the nominal favourite, there was also a perception that the Brackley outfit might not yet be revealing its full performance potential.

At the same time, Palmer relayed that other voices in the paddock had highlighted Ferrari’s strengths. The team’s power unit was considered highly reliable, the overall car concept appeared competitive, and ongoing upgrades were reportedly delivering further aerodynamic gains. In that context, several insiders believed Ferrari was unquestionably in the battle at the front alongside Mercedes and warned that overlooking the Scuderia at this stage would be premature.

Could 2026 finally be Hamilton’s year at Ferrari?

Ralf Schumacher has reportedly revised his earlier scepticism about Ferrari’s prospects after observing the team during testing. He now considers the Scuderia to be in a significantly stronger position than previously anticipated, particularly in relation to Lewis Hamilton’s adaptation to the new project.

Former driver and analyst Anthony Davidson also noted that Hamilton appeared entirely comfortable in Ferrari’s SF-26 during testing. Observers suggested that the seven-time world champion had exerted greater influence over the car’s development direction than in recent seasons, and that this input seemed to have contributed to a package better aligned with his driving style.

Williams driver Alex Albon has also been cited as believing that the 2026 regulations could favour Hamilton more than any other driver on the grid. The lighter cars introduced under the new rules may play to the Briton’s traditional strengths, particularly under braking — an area where the heavier ground-effect generation was widely considered to have limited his natural advantage.

Whether Ferrari can convert encouraging testing signals into a sustained championship challenge remains uncertain. The team has not secured a Drivers’ Championship since 2007, and the weight of expectation from the Tifosi continues to grow. However, if the sentiment circulating within the paddock proves accurate, 2026 could mark the beginning of a renewed title push for Ferrari — with either Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc aiming to restore the Scuderia to the summit of Formula 1.
