Former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert has offered his perspective on Lewis Hamilton’s long-term future in the sport, suggesting that even the most successful champions eventually face a natural decline in competitiveness. With Lewis Hamilton now racing for Ferrari alongside Charles Leclerc, the discussion around when a seven-time world champion should consider stepping away is once again gaining attention.
Speaking on the Stay on Track podcast, Johnny Herbert stressed that the key factor for any legendary driver is self-awareness. According to him, Lewis Hamilton will eventually need to be completely honest with himself when younger drivers begin to consistently match or exceed his level of performance. Herbert indicated that this moment often becomes the clearest signal that a career is approaching its final stage in Formula 1.
Johnny Herbert explained that, if he were close to Lewis Hamilton, his main advice would be straightforward: remain honest about current performance levels. He suggested that even though Lewis Hamilton has experienced a challenging adaptation period at Ferrari, there are signs of recovery and renewed competitiveness with the SF-26. A strong result such as a podium finish in Shanghai was highlighted as a potential turning point in his Ferrari journey and a sign that the British driver is still capable of competing at a high level.
However, Herbert also warned that Formula 1 is an environment where performance inevitably evolves over time. He noted that there will come a stage when things that once felt natural and easy will no longer be as straightforward for the Briton. At that point, according to Herbert, a driver must recognize that their peak years may be behind them and that stepping aside becomes a realistic consideration rather than an emotional decision.
Charles Leclerc and the pressure of the next generation
A key part of Johnny Herbert’s analysis focused on the internal dynamic at Ferrari, particularly the presence of Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque driver is seen as part of a new generation of Formula 1 talent that continues to raise the competitive standard across the grid. Within Ferrari, Charles Leclerc represents both a benchmark and a constant reference point for performance comparison.
Johnny Herbert pointed out that every era of Formula 1 has been defined by generational shifts, referencing past champions like Emerson Fittipaldi, Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Michael Schumacher, and Mika Häkkinen. According to him, each new wave of drivers has brought improvements in preparation, adaptability, and overall racecraft, making the sport increasingly demanding for even the most experienced competitors.
In this context, the internal battle between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc at Ferrari becomes particularly significant. Herbert suggested that while Lewis Hamilton remains highly motivated and continues to push himself to the absolute limit, the challenge posed by Charles Leclerc provides a clear measure of where he stands against the next generation of Formula 1 talent.
The former steward concluded that when a driver begins to question whether success feels as accessible as it once did—especially when consistently tested by a younger teammate like Charles Leclerc—it can signal the natural closing phase of a Formula 1 career. In the case of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, this ongoing comparison with Charles Leclerc may ultimately define how long he remains at the top level of the sport.
