Today’s edition of Il Corriere dello Sport underlines that Ferrari’s performance in Abu Dhabi should convince President John Elkann not to implement any revolution
Alberto Antonini (Former Ferrari F1 press officer, currently a Formula 1 journalist) praised the way in which the Maranello team was able to handle the pressure during the the weekend in Abu Dhabi at the Yas Marina circuit, a weekend that was preceded by rumors from the Italian media, which had reported that Mattia Binotto would be replaced by Frederic Vasseur as Ferrari team principal at the end of the 2022 Formula 1 season.
The Maranello team started the weekend at Yas Marina on Friday with worrying tire degradation based on the data collected from FP1 and FP2 in terms of race pace simulations, but Ferrari was able to identify the best setup for Sunday and Charles Leclerc managed to make the one-pitstop strategy work. The Monegasque driver finished in second place, ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and therefore secured second place in the Drivers standings at the end of the championship, while the Italian side also successfully defended its second place in the Constructors Standings, which was at threat after the poor performance seen in the previous two races.
The strong display seen from Ferrari during the Abu Dhabi weekend has certainly increased the regrets for other rather huge strategic errors seen this year, but which according to today’s edition of the Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport, should convince Ferrari President John Elkann to stick by his decision to deny the rumours of replacing Mattia Binotto.

Ferrari issued an official press release last week denying what it called “rumours” and “speculation” in Italian media that team principal Mattia Binotto will be replaced by Alfa Romeo team boss Fred Vasseur starting with the next Formula 1 season. In Abu Dhabi, the current Alfa Romeo boss avoided all questions on this matter, hiding behind a politically correct “soon you will know”.
“Ferrari’s second place finish both in the Drivers and Constructors standings means the team has achieved the goals set at the beginning of the season and confirms the improvement as compared to the previous year” – Corriere dello Sport wrote after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – “This has determined President John Elkann to go back on his initial intentions, to shrewdly take advantage of the official denial from last week and to pass off the rumors about Mattia Binotto’s removal as a collective hallucination.” – the Italian daily newspaper added.
