“We will honor the name of Enzo Ferrari”. This was the way in which Ferrari President John Elkann, in the presentation video of the Ferrari SF21, reassured fans and enthusiasts that the Scuderia from Maranello would not repeat such an anonymous season as it did in 2020, which the Italian side ended in sixth position in the Constructors’ standings.
The start of the 2021 Formula One season has exceeded expectations and Ferrari even has two pole positions out of six qualifying races. In Monaco and Baku Charles Leclerc was the fastest of all on Saturday and in particular in the Principality also Carlos Sainz had what it took to aim for a start from the top sport. The Spaniard then recovered in the race by taking second place behind Max Verstappen, scoring his first and so far only podium for Ferrari this season. Compared to 2020, however, the Constructors’ championship sees Ferrari in third place ahead of McLaren in a close fight (92 points for the Maranello team, 92 for McLaren).
From the Mille Miglia race which is underway this weekend, President John Elkann emphasized the change of pace highlighted by Ferrari at the start of the season: “Ferrari has improved a lot, we have seen it in recent races and this is a good starting point for doing even better.” – John Elkann’s words reported in today’s edition of Corriere dello Sport.
