In an analysis of the 2022 Formula 1 Emilia Romagna GP made for the Italian daily newspaper ‘Il Corriere della Sera’, former Scuderia Ferrari driver Jean Alesi takes a look at the events which took place at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, focusing mainly on what happened to the Maranello team, which was not able to live up to the expectations. The Italian side made several mistakes during the Emilia Romagna GP weekend and saw its lead over Red Bull (who scored a one-two finish) in the constructors’ standings significantly reduced.

According to the Frenchman, however, the disappointing performance of the Maranello team was “only” the result of a chain of unfavorable events. In summary, Jean Alesi encouraged the Ferrari fans to remain positive and have confidence in the team:

First of all, Jean Alesi focused on Charles Leclerc’s mistake in the final stages of the Grand Prix:

“He had only one opportunity to try to overtake Sergio Perez, on a track that allows DRS to be used in a single point. He was pushing like a desperate man and needed to minimize the disadvantage by exiting the Variante Gresini with remarkable speed. He got it wrong, but Charles is fighting for the World Championship, it is obvious that he is doing everything to win a second place rather than a third. I think that the mistake must be placed in a wider context”. – he explained.

Then, he focused on the Italian weekend in general, pointing out the complicated situation in which the teams were forced to operate:

“In Imola, between the Sprint Race and the weather, it was impossible to understand how to best adjust the cars. Between the wet track, reduced practice times and cars stuck in the parc fermé, it was impossible to work according to a real plan. Nobody could do it, including Red Bull who, with a bit of luck, took the right path immediately, while Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc, perhaps the whole team, in such a situation, found themselves looking for suitable adjustments with a bit of trouble. For this reason I believe that, if the race were to be repeated today, with three practice sessions and stable weather, I am not sure that the result would be identical to that seen on Sunday” – he admitted.

Finally, he commented on Scuderia Ferrari’s ambitions as follows:

“I am saying this to play down a bit what happened in Imola: it is obvious that no one likes the result of the race. But Ferrari was up there before the race and remains up there now. Let’s trust the team!” – Jean Alesi said.
