The 2021 Formula 1 season has given fans many emotions and twists, not only in the spectacular fight for the drivers’ title between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, but also for the positions immediately close to the podium. In particular, the internal challenge in the Ferrari garage between Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc created a lot of interest, which – in terms of points won during the 2021 Formula 1 championship, saw the Spaniard, in his first year with Ferrari, surprisingly prevail over the young Monegasque talent.
However, there are also those who have imagined that the unexpected final result in the standings could be a possible trigger for a future rivalry between the two drivers of the Maranello team.
According to the former Scuderia Ferrari driver Jean Alesi, having two drivers so close in terms of performance on the track represents a “nice problem” for Team Pricipal Mattia Binotto and the entire Ferrari management: “Triggering an explosive rivalry? No, on the contrary, it is a nice ‘problem’ for Ferrari to have two fast drivers – the Frenchman underlined during an interview with Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera – Ferrari has the strongest driver line-up in Formula 1. If Mercedes had a Charles Leclerc or Carlos Sainz instead of Bottas, they would have also have won the drivers’ title this year.”

For Ferrari fans, 2022 is the year of truth, the one in which the goal for the Maranello team must be to return competing at the top of the grid. Jean Alesi himself can do nothing but hope:
“I’m a fan and I have to be optimistic – said the former Ferrari #27 – my heart has always been red and will remain so. However, this year the level shown by Mercedes and Red Bull was very high. Both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton would have deserved the title this year. Then the safety car played its part in Abu Dhabi and changed everything, but that’s how racing is. It can happen. The rules are clear” – concluded Jean Alesi with regards to what happened in the last Grand Prix of the 2021 Formula 1 season – “The problem is the continuous dialogue between pit walls, team principals and the race director. Can you imagine Allegri or another Serie A managed connected to the referee through headphones? It would always be controversy. The football matches would never end.” – the former Ferrari driver explained.
