Williams Team Principal James Vowles does not expect a repeat of 2014 dominance in Formula 1, despite changes to the regulations for the 2026 season.
James Vowles on next season
“Next year, the hierarchies will not be defined from Melbourne. Development and the ability to improve quickly will be crucial. After Melbourne, the season certainly won’t be over, no matter where we stand. It will be a long road for everyone,” James Vowles said, highlighting that 2026 will be very different from recent years where the balance of power was fairly predictable from the start of the season.
Major regulatory changes are coming next year, affecting both power units and cars. Rumours suggest Mercedes could set the benchmark in terms of engine performance. Alpine will be a Mercedes customer, while Aston Martin will receive an exclusive supply from Honda, as Red Bull and Racing Bulls will run engines developed by the new Milton Keynes power unit division.
Williams’ perspective and cautious optimism
Williams showed significant improvement in 2025, finishing fifth in the Constructors’ Championship. Being a Mercedes customer should provide a competitive advantage, but James Vowles remains cautious. “I don’t think we’ll see a replay of 2014, where Mercedes-powered teams dominated from the start,” he said during a press conference in Abu Dhabi. “No manufacturer truly knows where they will be in terms of performance when the championship begins. A narrative is forming suggesting large performance gaps, but this is speculation. I strongly doubt Ferrari will struggle—they are very skilled, and Honda has also produced an excellent power unit over recent years. For us, any potential top-3 finish would exceed expectations.”
As the 2026 technical revolution approaches, James Vowles’ cautious stance highlights the immense uncertainty surrounding the new engine landscape. While rumors of a Mercedes advantage persist, the Williams boss suggests that the gap between the major manufacturers like Ferrari and Honda might be much narrower than many anticipate. For a team like Williams, balancing the excitement of their recent growth with the reality of a total regulatory reset will be the key to maintaining their momentum in the coming era of the sport.
