James Vowles has strongly defended Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur amid renewed speculation over the French manager’s position, arguing that Ferrari is performing at a high level and pointing to technical innovations that other Formula 1 teams have copied during the 2026 season.
Formula 1 is competing in Malaysia this weekend immediately after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, where much of the discussion surrounding Ferrari centred on speculation over Fred Vasseur’s future. The team principal has found himself under growing scrutiny following a combination of results that fell below expectations and renewed debate over the leadership of the Maranello team.
James Vowles defends Fred Vasseur amid Ferrari speculation
The situation attracted further attention following Christian Horner’s interview with The Times, in which the former Red Bull team principal openly presented himself as an option for Ferrari. The possibility of a future move to Maranello has already raised wider questions over the obstacles facing a potential Christian Horner route to Ferrari.
During Friday’s Formula 1 team principals’ press conference, Williams team principal James Vowles offered significant public support for Fred Vasseur. The Ferrari team principal thanked his Williams counterpart for the comments.
“Usually we punch each other and stab each other in the back, but Ferrari is in the best position it has been in for some time in the championship,” James Vowles said. “This year they have introduced innovations on the car, such as the rear wing and the exhaust system, which we have all consequently copied. It is a team that is achieving brilliant results. So, personally, I have absolutely no doubt that Fred is the right person for the role.”
Ferrari’s technical work earns praise from a rival team principal
James Vowles’ comments were notable not only because of his support for Fred Vasseur, but also because of his assessment of Ferrari’s technical progress. The Williams team principal specifically highlighted innovations introduced on the Ferrari car during 2026 and said rival teams had subsequently copied some of those ideas.
The remarks arrive at a time when Ferrari has moved publicly to reinforce its support for its team principal. The wider situation surrounding the French manager has already prompted the Maranello team to reaffirm its confidence in Fred Vasseur amid continuing speculation.
For James Vowles, however, Ferrari’s current championship position and the technical ideas developed by the team provide evidence that the project is producing meaningful results. His assessment therefore stands in contrast to the pressure surrounding the leadership discussion and offers direct support for the man currently in charge at Maranello.
Ferrari is also looking beyond the immediate speculation as it prepares for the next phase of its Formula 1 project, with Fred Vasseur’s longer-term future and Ferrari’s 2027 plans remaining central to the team’s direction.
