Speaking to Planetf1.com during the Italian Grand Prix weekend at the Monza circuit, Jacques Villeneuve assessed the situation at Scuderia Ferrari, also focusing on their drivers. The Canadian believes there’s a very specific reason why the Maranello team is struggling to find the path to the championship title. He also thinks that Carlos Sainz currently provides more assurance for the Prancing Horse than a frustrated Charles Leclerc. However, even the Spanish driver didn’t escape criticism from the 1997 World Champion. Here are his thoughts:
Jacques Villeneuve on Ferrari
Jacques Villeneuve is convinced that the main cause of Ferrari’s failures is the lack of strong leadership at the management level. “It’s chaos,” he said, referring to the Maranello team’s situation. Then he addressed on-track matters: “The car is difficult to drive, and right now, Charles Leclerc is not driving confidently, making too many mistakes. This doesn’t help the team progress. Carlos Sainz is currently the best driver at Ferrari.”
Despite praising the Spaniard, Jacques Villeneuve believes that the whole driver pairing isn’t up to par: “There isn’t the driving force coming from the drivers like there is at Red Bull with Max (Verstappen), at Aston Martin with Fernando (Alonso), and at Mercedes with Lewis (Hamilton). The drivers need to push the team, and right now, the Ferrari drivers aren’t really doing that.”
The Canadian went on to say, “Given Ferrari’s current situation, they need a driver who is consistent, who works slowly and in a controlled manner, who doesn’t get frustrated.” The opposite of what’s happening with Charles Leclerc: “Charles signed his big contract with Ferrari to become a world champion. Now he’s realizing that it probably won’t happen, given the way the team has evolved and how the car is performing. As a result, his frustration is showing on the track, and he’s not driving as well as he did in the past. He’s a better driver than what we’re seeing now.” – the Canadian concluded following the Italian Grand Prix.
