Jacques Villeneuve criticizes Lewis Hamilton: titles are just numbers, Fernando Alonso is more consistent
Former Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has once again stirred controversy with his latest remarks, this time aimed at seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. The Canadian driver, known for his outspoken views, shared his opinions during an episode of the podcast The Red Flags, in which he questioned the true value of Hamilton’s impressive statistics and records.
Despite Lewis Hamilton’s historic seven Formula 1 World Championship titles and numerous other records — many of which have either matched or surpassed those of past legends — Jacques Villeneuve argued that consistency, rather than raw numbers, is the true measure of greatness in Formula 1. In his view, Spanish driver Fernando Alonso represents a more consistent performer across the years.
“Yes, Lewis Hamilton has won seven world titles,” said Villeneuve, “but the important thing is not the number of championships, it’s something else. Many of those achievements came thanks to the superiority of the car he was driving. In terms of consistency, he hasn’t always been there.”
Jacques Villeneuve went on to elaborate that Lewis Hamilton often had races where his presence on track went unnoticed, implying that he would underperform or fade when not in a dominant car. “He disappeared in too many races,” the 1997 world champion added, “whereas Fernando Alonso has always been fast, even when his car was far from being one of the best on the grid.”
However, Jacques Villeneuve also had some criticisms for Fernando Alonso. He pointed out that the Spaniard made some career moves that ultimately hurt his chances of regularly fighting for the world title. Poor choices in team switches at critical moments arguably cost Alonso better championship opportunities.
According to Jacques Villeneuve, this is where Lewis Hamilton showed greater awareness and strategic thinking in managing his Formula 1 career. By making the right decisions at the right time — particularly referencing his move from McLaren to Mercedes in 2013 — Hamilton placed himself in the best possible position to succeed.
“He [Alonso] wasn’t good at that,” Jacques Villeneuve remarked. “Hamilton, on the other hand, made the right decisions at the right time,” he concluded.
Once again, Jacques Villeneuve’s candid views have reignited the debate among Formula 1 fans regarding the legacy of modern drivers. His comparison between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso is bound to generate further discussion within the paddock and beyond. What do you think about his assessment? Is consistency more important than titles in Formula 1?
