A race to forget for Scuderia Ferrari in Barcelona, as the focus now completely shifts to the next round of the 2022 Formula One season, the Monaco Grand Prix, which takes place in just a few days on the streets of Monte Carlo.
The Italian team has only collected fourteen points at the Circuit de Catalunya thanks to the fourth place scored by Carlos Sainz, and as a result, Red Bull are now leading both the Formula 1 Driver Standings and Constructor Standings.
There is bitterness in Maranello, also due to the mistake made by Carlos on the seventh lap (turn 4), which certainly cost important points in terms of the constructors’ championship. Charles Leclerc’s retirement (due to a problem with the power unit of his F1-75), however, was the most difficult blow to take, as the Monegasquedriver was dominating the Iberian race after an impressive pole position scored on Saturday and a perfect first part of the race.
Jacques Villeneuve analyzed the situation of Scuderia Ferrari in his usual editorial for Formule1.nl, also dwelling on the many reliability problems that the various teams are suffering from at the start of the 2022 Formula 1 season:
Here is what was written by the Canadian, who won the Formula 1 title back in 1997:
“Carlos Sainz is making too many mistakes, he’s clearly not on Charles Leclerc’s level. He really has to be constantly on the edge to keep up with Charles. Something like that shouldn’t happen to a car that puts you in a position to win races and fight for the Championship. The fact that he ends up behind a Mercedes is not a good sign. Charles Leclerc will no doubt be frustrated after the engine failure. He recorded an amazing lap in qualifying, took the lead and didn’t have to push until his turbo seemed to fail. I think we see so many reliability problems because the teams are pushing the limits of the cars. Mercedes has never had to do that in the past because they have always had a superior engine.” – former Formula 1 driver Jacques Villeneuve concluded.
