Speaking in a recent interview for the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica, Ivan Capelli analyzed the situation at Scuderia Ferrari, also drawing a comparison between the moment the Maranello team is going through and what the Mercedes is experiencing. Below is an excerpt of his most important comments.
Ivan Capelli’s analysis
“Ferrari no longer knows where it is, the worst possible condition to be in”, Ivan Capelli begins in front of the microphones of the well-known Italian newspaper. On the other hand, those who know well that they are in a comfortable position are Red Bull. “It is a frightening team, even due to the knowledge of their own flaws,” underlines the former driver, now a commentator for SkySportF1. But the Austrian side is not the only one that can smile in this start to the championship: “Aston Martin can be even more dangerous in the second part of the season”.
Ivan Capelli then concentrated particularly on the Maranello team: “The results on the track are very far from promises and premises. It’s the most difficult moment, you no longer have certainties. And then you have to spend time and money, not so much to make progress but to understand where are you”. There are two scenarios for Fred Vasseur: “If he changes the car today, the results could arrive in a few months, but if he trusts what the engineers tell him, he risks continuing to hit a brick wall”.
The comparison with Mercedes: “Fred Vasseur finds himself with a car designed by the Mattia Binotto management and, like Toto Wolff in Mercedes, he has two paths ahead: continue with the same project or rely on a copy and paste from Red Bull. And in a couple of months we will also have to think about 2024…”. There is a double challenge on the horizon: “This means that they will have to make these single-seaters work and work on next year’s ones”, concluded Ivan Capelli.
