The bond between Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari has yet to blossom: the British driver’s struggles in F1 are viewed with concern by Ivan Capelli. Budapest brought another disappointing weekend, with Hamilton finishing far from the points after yet another difficult qualifying session. Between Belgium and Hungary, the seven-time world champion seems to have completely lost his way. The summer break will serve to regroup and recharge, before what could be the final wild card of his career.
This version of Hamilton is unlike anything seen before: lacking energy, frustrated, possibly demoralized. He described himself as “useless” and publicly asked to be replaced by another driver. Not exactly the behavior expected from a seven-time world champion, nor from a Ferrari driver. Some have criticized him, others have defended him, but almost everyone is asking the same question: are we witnessing the end of an era?
The British driver, who only joined Maranello half a season ago, still has a long contract ahead. He is certain to wear red in 2026, when the technical revolution could reshuffle the deck and restore his confidence behind the wheel. That season may be his final chance to shine again and, perhaps, to finally claim the elusive eighth world title.
Capelli: “Hamilton still has one last wild card”
In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, former driver and now TV pundit Ivan Capelli did not hide his concerns: he believes Hamilton is living a sort of double life. Away from the racetrack, he remains the same old Hamilton, but once in the car, he is unable to find answers to his driving issues. Capelli observed that Hamilton has lost the sparkle in his eyes, and can no longer take control of the team in difficult moments as he once did.
Thinking he might give up is unthinkable, but something has to change. Recovering from such a moment is far from easy. Everything is different at Ferrari, and the working methods he was used to at Mercedes have completely changed. Capelli sees 2026 as the last wild card: “New car, new rules, everyone starts on equal terms,” he emphasized, still holding faith in the superstar from Stevenage.
