The use of the new Ferrari power unit on Charles Leclerc’s car during the Russian Grand Prix weekend was of key importance in view of the Maranello team’s 2022 Formula One engine, which will have to mark a real turning point compared to the last two seasons. The engine used on the Sochi track by the SF21 car of Charles in fact contained various elements of the future power unit, so much so that it was defined as the basis for next year’s project. Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto in the usual post-race analysis included the engine among the positive aspects of the weekend. Today’s edition of the Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport went into greater detail: “The new electrical part of the engine – a preview for the 2022 power unit – has given promising answers”.

The Ferrari team principal has already announced that “this evolution of new technology will then be combined with the redesigned thermal engine, which is also completely innovative” and the Roman newspaper added: “There is talk of a particularly efficient ignition, but there still is a long way to go in the pursuit of reliability. The intervention window is wide: almost six months of work, given that the power unit will be homologated on the eve of the first Grand Prix of the next world championship”. The new unit, destined for Charles Leclerc in Russia, could make its debut on Carlos Sainz’s car as early as the next Turkish Grand Prix, to get broader feedback from both drivers. The growth path does not stop only with the engine and the drivers, it will also be necessary to improve strategies and be at the forefront with the new aerodynamics imposed by the regulatory revolution.
