Ferrari, too many mistakes
Red Bull 41 points, McLaren 28, Mercedes 20, Ferrari 10: this is the score achieved by these four teams at the end of the 2023 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix. The updated RB19 allowed Max Verstappen to experience yet another Sunday in the lead all by himself (“There are Sundays when you put on any tire and go very fast,” he said in the press conference), and Sergio Perez to climb from ninth position to the podium.
For the second consecutive Sunday, McLaren finished second with Lando Norris, although in reality, the second force on the track yesterday was Mercedes, betrayed at the start by Lewis Hamilton but supported by George Russell’s comeback from 18th to the final sixth position. The Englishman finished ahead of both Ferrari cars, which is the main indicator of how the performance of the SF-23 was not up to par, given that George Russell, starting from the back of the grid, beat them both.
In reality, the former Williams driver finished behind Charles Leclerc on the finish line, but a five-second penalty for the Monegasque’s pit-lane speeding pushed the Ferrari man back a position. Today’s edition of the Italian newspaper La Repubblica precisely highlights that the Hungarian GP was a series of mistakes for the Maranello team:
“So many blunders. From the drivers in Saturday’s qualifying. From the mechanics when changing Charles’s tires. Once again, it was the Monegasque, penalized five seconds after the race for going too fast in the pit lane: it cost him a position. And the entire team struggled in managing the (modest) current potential of the SF-23. Even the team’s radio in the pit box was broken yesterday.” – La Repubblica pointed out.

McLaren, from wheelbarrow to top car
Italian journalist Leo Turrini’s comment on the Hungarian Grand Prix in today’s edition of Il Resto del Carlino emphasizes how the ever-darker picture for Ferrari is exacerbated by McLaren’s explosive growth, proving that a season can turn in the right direction: “The truth, depressing, is that this Ferrari deals heavy blows to the passion of those who love it. There seems to be no turning point. The feeling is disturbing that every attempt to solve technical problems turns out to be inadequate, not up to par, a failure in substance. But there’s more (and worse). What amazes is the progression of a car like McLaren, which in the spring seemed like a wheelbarrow and is now up there at the front. It shows that in this Formula 1, things can be fixed by working with the right determination.” – Leo Turrini explained.
