The Monday morning papers do not make for good reading at Ferrari as the Italian press continue to slate them for their lack of competitiveness.
The Tuscan Grand Prix at Mugello marked Ferrari’s 1000th Formula 1 race and while there was plenty to celebrate about their past, there certainly isn’t anything to celebrate about their present.
Both Ferrari cars, sporting a special, retro livery, were at least back in the points – but P8 and P10 in what was eventually a 12-car race takes the shine off quite considerably.
Ferrari fully recognise that “they are in a hole”, to coin the phrase used by Scuderia CEO Louis Camilleri over the weekend, and the Italian press are not letting them even begin to start climbing out of it.
Here is how the leading publications in Italy summarised the historic landmark race for the Scuderia:
Gazzetta dello Sport: ‘When Ferrari wants to celebrate its glorious past, Mercedes dominates the race on the Scuderia track. Any festive mood for the 1000th race is erased immediately by the bitterness of this catastrophic 2020.’
Tuttosport: ‘A terrible race at Mugello. Ferrari is sinking deeper and deeper into the crisis. The disappointment and frustration of the Tifosi are growing, especially because there is still no way out.’
Corriere dello Sport: ‘Once again a disgrace for Ferrari, and this time at the home race track in Mugello. The Scuderia falls far behind in the World Championship. It will take a long time to resolve this situation, there are no future prospects at the moment.’
La Repubblica: ‘The first Grand Prix in Mugello will be remembered as another catastrophe for Ferrari. The celebration of the great past of the racing team is overshadowed by the present with no hope.’
Corriere della Sera: ‘While the other teams have grown, Ferrari is sinking more and more into an unprecedented crisis. Leclerc has to hoist the white flag in front of the attacks by Renault, McLaren and Racing Point. A sporting drama for a highly motivated driver.’
After the ninth race of the season, Ferrari sit sixth in the Constructors’ Championship. They are 17 points behind Renault in P5 and a whopping 259 points behind World Championship leaders Mercedes.
