Formula 1 journalist and expert Giorgio Terruzzi, through a recent article for the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, looked back on Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc’s difficult weekend in Australia, the last round before the sprint break.
First a disappointing qualifying session at the Albert Park circuit, with disagreements within the team itself, then a race that didn’t last too long due to an accident at the start. Whether it was Lance Stroll’s fault or the Ferrari driver was to blame, the frustration on the Monegasque’s face was evident after the incident on lap 1 of the Australian Grand Prix.
This is his worst start to a season since he has been with the Maranello team, and is second only to his start at Sauber, in his debut year. And who knows what is going on in the mind of the Monegasque driver:
“Charles Leclerc has discovered that he is facing another car far from glory, another season far from Max Verstappen. There is restlessness, nothing more. He can’t win. He can’t leave, assuming he wants to. Red Bull and Mercedes have top drivers that would not want Charles alongside them”.

“He is therefore confined to another purgatory year while having to witness the success of his rival. That the relationship with Ferrari is not ideal is demonstrated by the expressions and actions on the track, as if the lack of confidence in the team ends up contracting the gestures, compromising that ability to make decisions and take risks, which places him in an exclusive racing club”.
Giorgio Terruzzi proposes an opposite view to the one Charles Leclerc shows to the media. After the Australian Grand Prix, in a press conference, he said that he was frustrated, that it had been a racing incident, not dictated by the tension in qualifying. Inside, there is the discouragement of a Grand Prix thrown away with a car that for the first time seemed competitive, with his teammate Carlos Sainz passing one opponent after another, before he also made a crucial mistake that sent him outside the points zone.
Who is now the first Ferrari driver?
A few weeks ago, Giorgio Terruzzi had spoken about a possible collision in Ferrari. “Charles and Carlos will be the first line-up to argue. If Charles gets behind Carlos again he will start saying something,” he suggested in his podcast. And the prediction turned out to be unfortunately true.
“Who is the reference driver in Ferrari at this moment? The uncertainty that precedes each answer indicates an unexpected and disconcerting unease. For all of those who support Scuderia Ferrari, for Charles Leclerc himself, caught in a double and painful trap. Carlos Sainz has a different past, with a mental strength opposite to that of Charles, strengthened by Charles’ anxieties, disappointed as he is, frustrated as he is.” – the Italian journalist pointed out.
And in the meantime Carlos Sainz can be slightly more happy than his teammate. Had it not been for the penalty, his points margin would have been much greater in the Drivers championship. And the team would have to work in favor of a more constant Carlos Sainz than Charles Leclerc.
Leo Turrini also writes about “saving Leclerc, from himself and from the team. Because he risks burning a young and crystalline talent, yet another living fire extinguished by the waters of Maranello.”
