Scuderia Ferrari clinched a memorable 1-2 finish with Charles Leclerc winning the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix, almost six seconds ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz Jr and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who took advantage of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez’s engine issue to take the final step of the podium. Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen staged a thrilling wheel-to-wheel dice after their first round of pit stops, swapping places five times in two laps before the Ferrari driver kept the lead until the end.
Above all, this start of the 2022 Formula 1 season in Bahrain ‘cancels’ a two-year period of painful anonymity spent working hard in the factory to experience the ‘Red Renaissance’ from 2022: “It’s Ferrari’s New Year, the liberation party that ends the black streak of 45 GPs without a win. Two years and 5 months, 910 days have passed since the last success, in Singapore 2019 (back then there was also a 1-2 with Sebastian Vettel ahead of Charles Leclerc). It was another world. But this result is worth three times more, you can read it on the face of every member of the Maranello team after the Bahrain Grand Prix. It closes deep wounds, seasons of humiliation for having to fight in the back, for midfield places or for occasional podiums”, writes Daniele Sparisci in the Italian daily newspaper Il Corriere della Sera.
“It is part of Scuderia Ferrari’s best history to create heart-breaking emotions – the opening words of Leo Turrini in Il Resto del Carlino which headlines ‘The first day of spring’ – and it happened in the most spectacular way possible. Carletto Leclerc dominated from the first to the last meter, adapting his imperial driving style to all the circumstances that the race was offering. But once the mastery of the driver has been sublimated, it is right to finally and dutifully pay homage to Ferrari as a team. It lived up to a wager sadly planned two years ago, when it was clear to everyone that we fans were expecting a tiring and exhausting crossing of the desert to reach this point”.
‘Delirio Rosso’ is the title of the double page of Repubblica at the opening of its section dedicated to sport. “Ferrari double, Red Bull double zero. The disproportion of the result of the first Grand Prix of the 2022 World Championship is not due to the bad luck of the two cars with their wings clipped in the last laps. It is the result of a perfect weekend for Ferrari. The drivers, the team, the car, the engine, the strategies and the very fast pit stops of Maranello, without any weakness. Less precise were the Anglo-Austrians, despite having a car updated from the last tests at the Sakhir circuit, and above all vulnerable – wrote Alessandra Retico – this is a new era and Ferrari arrived prepared, rebuilding with difficulty and pride from the ashes, focusing everything on the new technical cycle to fight back. The engineers led by Enrico Cardile evaluated every option and interpretation of the new regulations before developing the car”.
