Following the Hungarian Grand Prix of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, Scuderia Ferrari came under fire once again for yet another disappointing performance in what has become a difficult and frustrating season.
Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc struggled significantly during the fourteenth round of the season. For the seven-time world champion from the United Kingdom, this period represents one of the most complicated phases of his career—he has not been able to establish a proper connection with his Ferrari SF-25, and as a result, doubts about his form and future continue to grow.
Charles Leclerc, on the other hand, brought a brief moment of hope to the Ferrari garage by taking a spectacular pole position in Saturday’s qualifying session. However, the number 16 Ferrari could not maintain the lead during the race on Sunday and ultimately finished a disappointing fourth, far from what fans and the team had expected after such a promising start to the weekend.
In the aftermath of the Grand Prix, well-known Italian journalist Leo Turrini shared his perspective on the situation and shed light on a troubling statistic regarding Charles Leclerc. Turrini pointed out that the Monegasque driver has now secured 27 pole positions in Formula 1 but has only managed to convert five of them into race wins.
He commented: “Over 80% of Charles Leclerc’s pole positions have not resulted in victories, and his career total remains at just eight wins. That number simply does not reflect the true talent and class of this driver.”
Leo Turrini also questioned the official version of events coming from the team, which suggested that excessive wear to the car’s wooden plank was the reason Ferrari lost the chance to win. He said: “Whether it was the worn plank that destroyed the hopes of the Prancing Horse or something else hardly matters at this point. The issue is that there’s an ongoing trend here—an underlying fragility in this team that so far remains unresolved.”
He then referenced Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur’s recent remarks: “The newly confirmed Frédéric Vasseur is absolutely right when he says that, in today’s Formula 1, success depends on getting everything right and bringing all elements together. Clearly, Ferrari still hasn’t reached that point.”
Is Hamilton the weak link at Ferrari?
Lewis Hamilton has enjoyed a long and successful history at the Hungaroring circuit throughout his Formula 1 career. However, in his first Hungarian Grand Prix as a Ferrari driver, he failed to continue his impressive streak of results. The British driver is currently going through a particularly difficult phase at Maranello, where he is struggling to find his rhythm and make a competitive impact on track.
On this topic, Leo Turrini did not hold back. He stated: “There’s no point beating around the bush: right now, in August 2025, Ferrari is essentially racing with just one driver. In other words, Lewis Hamilton is not there.
Now, for countless reasons, Lewis Hamilton deserves respect. He has made history in this sport—he is part of Formula 1 history. Criticizing his current crisis is difficult even on a human level, and I have no doubt that Hamilton himself is not immune to the embarrassment of these performances.”
Leo Turrini continued: “However, there’s a limit. If Charles Leclerc is fighting for pole positions and podiums, then Hamilton has to be close behind. He must be, exactly—otherwise it becomes difficult to understand why he ever chose Maranello and Ferrari in the first place.”
He concluded with a pointed reflection: “As I’ve written before, only Lewis knows the full truth. Does he still have what it takes? If so, it’s time to prove it—without resorting to cryptic social media messages or vague interviews that only leave even his strongest supporters confused and concerned.”
