As usual after each Grand Prix in the 2022 Formula 1 season, Italian sports journalist and author Leo Turrini was interviewed by Calciomercato.com to make some considerations about the Silverstone race, which was won by Carlos Sainz for Scuderia Ferrari. The well-known journalist focused in particular on the situation of the Maranello team and on the frightening accident that miraculously saw Guanyu Zhou unharmed.
Below are some of his most important comments after the British Grand Prix:
“Many say that the wrong Ferrari car won at Silverstone? I know they say that, but I disagree. We can discuss the choices of the Ferrari pitwall for hours and Charles Leclerc has every right to be sad. Even very angry. But it’s not that it was easy to choose, in real time, in just a few seconds. Sorry for Charles Leclerc but Ferrari has won one of the most beautiful races of the last ten years and it would be good to underline it. Among other things, on the day Hamilton was again in the battle for the race win.”
About Carlos Sainz
“Did he give the impression of not wanting to help Charles Leclerc? A true observation. But we should take into consideration the fact that the Spaniard does not consider himself a second driver, even in the world rankings they are close. What should they have ordered him, to go slow? Then there was certainly a mistake in my opinion: when the safety car was out, Charles Leclerc should have also been called for fresh tires.”
About the accident on the first lap
“How scary! For Zhou, the Chinese driver from Alfa, we really feared the worst. Thank goodness Formula 1 was equipped with Halo, the tool that saves the drivers’ necks and heads. It went well this time”.
