Last Sunday, Scuderia Ferrari fans celebrated an amazing victory in the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, secured by Carlos Sainz at the Marina Bay street circuit after starting from pole position, finally ending a drought of over a year without a race win.
However, not everyone seems to have taken this victory well. For about a week, social media has been buzzing with controversies about the management of driver hierarchies within the Maranello team. Some users argue that recently there has a preference for Carlos Sainz over Charles Leclerc, who, in their view, should be the Italian side’s lead driver.
Italian journalist and motorsport expert Giorgio Terruzzi, on the other hand, has come to Scuderia Ferrari’s defense, stating that using the Monegasque as a support driver for his Maranello teammate was a tactical decision to secure a much-needed victory. Many times this year, there have been team orders in favor of car number 16.
“There are users stirring up controversies online because Ferrari seems to have favored one driver over another, or that Charles Leclerc was used as a ‘sacrificial lamb’. These are discussions stemming from a lack of competitive and sports knowledge. However, nowadays, anyone can say whatever they want. Charles Leclerc himself said it: Carlos Sainz took pole position, and they rightly fitted Charles Leclerc with soft tires to try and secure the second spot at the start. Then they executed a double pit stop, and when that happens, the second driver faces difficulties. Saying there’s discrimination in favor of Carlos Sainz means having no understanding of reality. We criticized Ferrari for not playing team games, and now they’ve done it well. It was Carlos Sainz’s turn this time, but how many times have they favored car number 16?” the Italian expert remarked.
