Toto Wolff has once again spoken about his favorite driver, Lewis Hamilton, drawing comparisons with the legendary Michael Schumacher and their late-career challenges. The 2025 season has gradually become a test of endurance for the Briton, as he faces difficulties in his debut year with Ferrari. Toto Wolff recently commented on the seven-time world champion, comparing him with the only other driver to hold seven titles, Michael Schumacher. The Mercedes team principal discussed the British driver’s adaptation challenges since arriving at Maranello and whether he can return to his former dominance.
Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff’s legacy in Formula 1
Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff have written an indelible chapter in Formula 1 history. Lewis Hamilton won six world titles with Mercedes and firmly established himself as one of the greatest drivers in the sport. However, the #44 driver does not seem to be the same as before, and Toto Wolff was keen to highlight this reality.
Wolff on the trajectory of seven-time world champions
The Mercedes team principal began by discussing the final phase of Michael Schumacher’s career when the German joined Mercedes: “He was still a brilliant driver, but not as complete as during his Ferrari years, when he dominated his teammates. And Lewis Hamilton has not dominated his teammates over the past 2-3 years.”
We have already noted the British seven-time champion’s struggles with the new generation of ground-effect cars. Since the start of 2022, the Briton has not been the dominant force he once was, though it is important to highlight that he never had a truly competitive car to showcase his full potential. The same situation has been evident in his first season with Ferrari.
“I think you probably only realize it when you are inside it. At McLaren and Mercedes, there is a kind of normality because you are British and used to working in that environment. Then you arrive at an Italian team, so passionate and emotional, and you are a bit like a fish out of water. But if he gets a car he likes, then he can drive fast.”
The next season will be crucial for Lewis Hamilton, as a regulation reset will occur. Of course, Ferrari will need to do everything possible to build a title-contending car; otherwise, once again, the British driver would not have the opportunity to perform at his best. In conclusion, Lewis Hamilton’s and Michael Schumacher’s career trajectories are not entirely similar. They have experienced very different paths, though they share one key similarity: the dominance they displayed to the eyes of the world.
