Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence fuels debate over Ferrari’s long-term priorities
Few topics are generating more discussion among Ferrari supporters than the evolving dynamic between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. While the Scuderia entered the season expecting to benefit from one of the strongest driver pairings in Formula 1, recent developments have led some observers to wonder whether the balance inside the team is beginning to shift.
The conversation has gained momentum following a series of contrasting performances from Ferrari’s two drivers. Lewis Hamilton has steadily increased his competitiveness over recent race weekends, while Charles Leclerc has endured a more complicated period despite continuing to extract solid results from the SF-26 whenever circumstances allow.
The debate recently took center stage during an episode of the Terruzzi Racconta podcast, where journalists and Formula 1 insiders examined whether Ferrari’s technical and strategic direction could be moving closer to Lewis Hamilton’s preferences.
Recent performances have changed the narrative
Only a few months ago, much of the discussion surrounding Ferrari focused on Lewis Hamilton’s adaptation process. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion was learning the characteristics of a completely different car after more than a decade with Mercedes, while Charles Leclerc appeared firmly established as Ferrari’s reference driver.
However, the picture has evolved significantly.
Lewis Hamilton delivered convincing performances in both Canada and Monaco, showing increasing comfort with the SF-26 and demonstrating the race pace and consistency that helped him become one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history.
Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc has faced a more turbulent period. Although the Monegasque secured a fourth-place finish in Montreal, several weekends have been complicated by technical issues, setup challenges and the frustration of not being able to consistently maximize the car’s potential.
This shift in momentum has inevitably influenced perceptions both inside and outside the paddock.
Technical differences raise new questions
One of the most intriguing aspects of the discussion involves the technical divergence between the two Ferrari cars.
Recent reports have suggested that Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are not running identical configurations, particularly regarding their braking systems. While differences in setup between teammates are common in Formula 1, the situation has attracted attention because it coincides with the changing competitive picture within Ferrari.
Analysts discussing the issue noted that the performance gap which traditionally favored Charles Leclerc over his teammates has become far less evident this season. In certain qualifying sessions and race weekends, Lewis Hamilton has even managed to establish himself as the stronger Ferrari driver.
Such trends naturally lead to questions about whether Ferrari is gradually moving toward solutions that better suit Lewis Hamilton’s driving style.
Of course, that does not necessarily mean Ferrari is intentionally favoring one driver over the other. Teams routinely pursue the fastest technical path available, regardless of which driver initially identifies the most effective setup direction.
Is Ferrari building around Lewis Hamilton?
The broader discussion extends beyond lap times and technical specifications.
Some commentators have suggested that Ferrari’s investment in Lewis Hamilton represents more than a short-term sporting decision. The arrival of the seven-time world champion brought enormous commercial value, global attention and an unprecedented level of experience to Maranello.
As a result, every sign of progress from Lewis Hamilton inevitably attracts scrutiny regarding Ferrari’s future priorities.
Observers participating in the podcast argued that the recent trend could create the impression that Ferrari is placing greater emphasis on the direction identified by Lewis Hamilton. They pointed to the Briton’s improving results and growing influence within the team as evidence that his feedback may be carrying increasing weight.
At the same time, they noted the contrast with Charles Leclerc, who has repeatedly demonstrated extraordinary loyalty to Ferrari throughout his career despite enduring several difficult championship campaigns.
Charles Leclerc remains central to Ferrari’s future
Despite the speculation, there are also strong arguments against the idea that Ferrari is moving away from Charles Leclerc.
The Scuderia recently committed to the Monegasque with a long-term contract extension, reinforcing its belief in his talent and importance to the project. Such a commitment would be difficult to reconcile with any suggestion that Ferrari sees Charles Leclerc as a secondary figure within the team.
Furthermore, Charles Leclerc remains one of the fastest drivers on the Formula 1 grid and continues to be regarded as a cornerstone of Ferrari’s long-term ambitions.
What may be happening instead is a natural consequence of Lewis Hamilton’s adaptation process finally beginning to bear fruit. As the Briton becomes more comfortable with the SF-26 and Ferrari gains a clearer understanding of how to extract performance from both drivers, the internal balance is becoming more competitive than ever.
Nevertheless, the discussion highlights an intriguing reality. For the first time since Lewis Hamilton arrived in Maranello, there is a growing perception that the momentum inside Ferrari may be shifting.
Whether that shift represents a temporary phase or the beginning of a deeper transformation remains one of the most fascinating storylines to follow as the Formula 1 season continues.
