Will Ferrari choose to dedicate a mourning livery to the death of Pope Francis for the Miami GP? At the moment this is a pure hypothesis, but one grounded in historical precedents. In fact, if the Maranello team were to make such a choice, it would not be the first time.
Indeed, for the 2005 Bahrain GP, held on April 3rd, Ferrari chose to paint the front nose of the car black just a few days after the death of Pope John Paul II. At the time, the decision was well received in the paddock. A sober yet powerful gesture, which was met with great respect by both the paddock and the fans.
Black livery details for Ferrari in Miami in mourning for Pope Francis?
That gesture represented not only a sign of mourning but also an act of deep institutional respect. Not only that: Ferrari also chose to paint the nose of the car black after the fall of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, confirming that the Maranello team is not new to the choice of adding a black detail on the front wing as a symbol of mourning.
The next GP on the calendar is the Miami GP, scheduled for May 4th. No one from Maranello has yet spoken about the possibility of making such a choice, but it cannot be completely ruled out.
If confirmed, the black livery in mourning for the Pope could feature elements similar to those seen in 2005: matte black details on the nose, wings, or engine cover, and (though very unlikely) the possible removal of commercial logos as a sign of respect, as was the case after the Twin Towers. Alternatively, the team might opt for a symbolic black armband on parts of the car or on the drivers’ suits.
At the moment, no formal communication has come from Ferrari. The decision may be made right before the race weekend. If confirmed, Ferrari would ideally join the global mourning.
