The dynamic between Ferrari’s new teammates, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, is set to become one of the most compelling storylines of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
The last time Hamilton was paired with a new teammate on the grid was when George Russell replaced Valtteri Bottas at Mercedes ahead of the 2021 season. Russell, having spent several seasons learning from the seven-time world champion, ultimately finished ahead of Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship last year. In 2025, he steps into the role of team leader at Mercedes, alongside rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
For Leclerc, the reality of Carlos Sainz being replaced by Hamilton at Ferrari is now fully settled, following weeks of working together in Maranello, Fiorano, and at the Circuit de Catalunya..
Hamilton’s recent crash during a Ferrari test has already impacted Leclerc’s preparations for the 2025 season. The damage to their shared car meant Leclerc had to sit out part of the testing, and his subsequent session at Fiorano was cut short by unfavorable weather conditions.
Both drivers enter the 2025 season with a singular aim: to end Ferrari’s long title drought. The Scuderia’s last championship came in 2007 when Kimi Raikkonen defeated Lewis Hamilton by a single point in the Briton’s rookie year. In order to beat the likes of McLaren, Red Bull, and Mercedes—Hamilton’s former team—team principal Frederic Vasseur will need both drivers to work in unison during pre-season testing and at the season opener in Australia.
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc: Building the Partnership
According to reports from the Italian daily newsoaoer Gazzetta dello Sport, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have been collaborating well before Hamilton even set foot in Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters. Leclerc himself has acknowledged that his relationship with Hamilton differs from that with Carlos Sainz, but insists that it’s not necessarily a negative development.
The report suggests that Hamilton has been actively working to build rapport with Leclerc since the start of last season, recognizing that they would soon share a common objective in 2025 and beyond. It’s believed that Hamilton used every opportunity in their meetings to learn more about his new teammate and to share his vision for Ferrari’s future direction.

Even while Hamilton was focused on making the most of his final season with Mercedes, he was already keeping a close eye on his impending switch to Ferrari. Formula 1 commentator Martin Brundle noted that Lewis Hamilton would have been particularly impressed by what he saw from Ferrari during a race last year, with Leclerc’s strong finish to the season serving as a source of encouragement for Hamilton, who now believes 2025 could be the year he captures a historic eighth title.
Charles Leclerc: Rising to the Challenge
For the Monegasque driver, the challenge is clear: he must leverage the experience he’s gained over the past few years to assert himself against his new teammate. Charles Leclerc is likely to be faster out of the gate in the 2025 season, as Hamilton continues to adapt to Ferrari’s systems. Charles Leclerc’s natural qualifying pace should also give him an early advantage, and if he can translate that into solid race results, he could put pressure on Fred Vasseur when it comes to deciding the team’s number-one driver for the year.
Should the Monegasque position himself as a strong contender against the likes of Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and George Russell, Lewis Hamilton may find himself waiting until 2026 to mount his next serious title challenge.
