Incredible scenes are coming directly from São Paulo, following what happened in Mexico just a week ago. Some fans were caught assaulting the stewards at the end of the Brazilian GP, and then they invaded the track while the race was still ongoing. The FIA immediately initiated an investigation into the incident, summoning the promoter of the grand prix before the sports commissioners.
Fans assault Marshals, Then Track Invasion While the Race Was Still On
In the first seconds of the video posted on Metropòles X account, a Brazilian news outlet, you can see a fan kicking a security staff member beyond the fences. The security staff member then reacted to calm the situation.
With the help of a ladder, several fans managed to breach the barriers, invading the track with the cars still on the circuit.
This is the second case of a track invasion while the grand prix was still ongoing this year, following the one in Melbourne. Back in April, some fans invaded the Albert Park circuit just moments before the end of the Australian GP.
“A large group of spectators managed to break the security lines and access the area at the start of Turn 1 while the race was ending and the cars were still on the track,” the sports commissioners said in a statement.
“Security measures and/or security agents and/or equipment that were supposed to be in place for the event were not applied and/or were insufficient, causing an unsafe environment for spectators and drivers.”
“SPF1 (the promoter) candidly admitted the shortcomings in terms of security protocols and security measures. SPF1 agreed with the FIA Delegate’s report and the Race Director. It concurred that similar circumstances had already occurred in Brazil and it was an unacceptable situation that could have had disastrous consequences. As a mitigating factor, SPF1 stated that it will conduct a thorough investigation. It will also take steps to remedy the situation in time for the next event in Brazil.”
The promoter will now have until January 30, 2024, to submit a report outlining their response to what the FIA has deemed an “unacceptable situation.” Not a good look for the Brazilian event, which just renewed until 2030 this weekend.
