Imola has unexpectedly re-emerged as a possible venue for the closing stages of the 2026 Formula 1 season, with further uncertainty surrounding the championship’s remaining Middle Eastern races. Following the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix because of geopolitical instability in the region, speculation has increased that the final two scheduled events in the Middle East could also be placed at risk.
That scenario could force Formula 1 and the FIA to consider alternative venues to complete the 2026 Formula 1 calendar. Among the most credible candidates is the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, although staging a race in Imola late in the year would also raise questions about local weather conditions and the practical demands of holding an event during a very different seasonal window.
Imola F1 return becomes a possibility again
The Italian circuit has remained in close contact with Formula One Management despite being left off the 2026 F1 calendar. Imola mayor Marco Panieri confirmed that dialogue was continuing after travelling to the Hungaroring with circuit director Pietro Benvenuti during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.
“We are at the F1 Grand Prix in Hungary to continue, together with circuit director Pietro Benvenuti, our analysis of other tracks, move forward with the modernisation projects for our facility and keep the channels open with Formula 1, which have never closed during these months,” Marco Panieri said.
Imola had already been discussed alongside other potential replacement venues earlier in the season, when Imola and Portimao emerged as contingency options amid concerns surrounding the Middle Eastern rounds.
Major improvements continue at the Imola circuit
Marco Panieri also emphasised that development work at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari was proceeding according to schedule. The projects include the Casa Eventi, a new covering for the pit building, the new Tosa bridge and revised road access along the Faenza side of the Via Emilia.
These investments are intended to make the circuit increasingly competitive as Imola pursues the possibility of securing a more stable return to the Formula 1 World Championship in the future.
“Of course, we are pleased by the interest surrounding Imola and the possibility of its return to the calendar. As always, we are ready and available, and we work to ensure that we are always prepared in the best possible way,” Marco Panieri added.
His comments made clear that the city would be ready to respond quickly if Formula 1 needed to replace one of the races currently facing uncertainty. The championship has already been considering contingency plans for the 2026 calendar as the international situation continues to evolve.
Why Imola is a credible Formula 1 replacement
Formula 1 has not issued any official communication confirming that Imola is under consideration. However, the circuit’s recent experience of hosting Grands Prix, its proven organisational capabilities and its current homologation make the Italian venue one of the most realistic options if further changes to the calendar become necessary.
Imola also remained a potential candidate during earlier uncertainty surrounding other events, including speculation that it could replace Madrid on the 2026 calendar. Its established infrastructure and familiarity with Formula 1 operations could be particularly valuable if organisers were required to arrange a replacement race within a limited timeframe.
Marco Panieri addresses the wider international situation
Despite welcoming the renewed interest in Imola, Marco Panieri stressed that the international situation and the communities affected by conflict remained the immediate priority.
“Our first thoughts go to the regions of the world that are still affected by tensions and conflicts, in the hope of a return to normality that we all desperately need. Sport and motorsport can and must represent an extraordinary vehicle for dialogue, inclusion and unity between peoples, carrying a universal message of hope, respect and peaceful coexistence,” the Imola mayor said.
Imola waits for further developments
A window of opportunity has therefore reopened for Imola only weeks after a return to Formula 1 appeared increasingly unlikely. Much will depend on how the geopolitical situation develops over the coming weeks, and there is currently no confirmation that any of the remaining races will be replaced.
The message delivered from Hungary was nevertheless clear: the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari is ready, its modernisation programme is continuing and dialogue with Formula 1 remains open. If the championship requires an alternative venue for the closing stages of the 2026 season, Imola is positioning itself to respond.
