The one-two finished achieved by Scuderia Ferrari at the end of the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix, the first round of new Formula 1 championship, has charged the Maranello environment with fresh and high expectations. The competitiveness is there, the only drawback could derive from a possible lack of reliability on the part of the Maranello power unit. The Italian side appears to have used more conservative mapping in Bahrain to try to better monitor the situation. But at the same time, if we consider that this did not stop Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz from achieving that brilliant result, there is really a lot to smile about in this start of the 2022 Formula 1 campaign.
Carlos Sainz’s prediction
Inside the Maranello team’s garage there is therefore the awareness of being able to conduct a memorable season. Carlos Sainz was invitated at ‘The Great Match of COPE’, a Spanish radio sports program and revealed his first prediction for the 2022 Formula 1 season: “Even if we brought both cars to the podium in the opening weekend we cannot exclude anyone from the fight. Mercedes will be back, Max Verstappen could also have won. I therefore believe that it will be a three-way battle for the title. We need to stay focused and try to develop the car correctly. Mercedes and Red Bull will improve rapidly.” – the Spanish driver pointed out.
Another highly discussed topic after the Bahrain Grand Prix is how will the relationship between Charles and Carlos evolve over the course of the season now that both of them can count on a car capable of challenging for race wins and hopefully the F1 title. According to the Spaniard, there will be nothing to worry about because the topic has already been discussed in Maranello: “The team will allow us to compete and race each other. Obviously, if one of us stands out and gains a lead in the standings, the other one will help during the world championship fight. It happens in all teams. What matters is taking part in the battle. The ideal situation would be to compete for the title between us without having the pressure of other teams. I want to be at the top.” – he added.
Charles Leclerc appears to have an advantage at the moment, but Carlos Sainz doesn’t appear too worried. He is aware of the aspects he has to work on to improve and match his Maranello teammate: “As far as I’m concerned, I have to be able to feel perfectly at ease in the car and adapt my driving style to it. Put simply, Charles knows how to get the most out of the car.” – he admitted – “I’ll try to enjoy the year. It is the first time that it seems I will be able to count on a title-winning car.
