McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has tempered expectations ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, suggesting that a podium finish over Ferrari would be a significant challenge. After a strong qualifying performance, McLaren will start the race from third place with Oscar Piastri and fifth with Lando Norris, while Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will line up in fourth and sixth, respectively.
Stella acknowledges Ferrari’s race pace
Speaking to the media, Andrea Stella emphasized that Ferrari has demonstrated strong race pace, making it difficult for McLaren to compete directly for podiums. He admitted that he would be “positively surprised” if McLaren were in a position to challenge the Scuderia over the full race distance.
“Ferrari have shown they gained some relative pace in the race,” Andrea Stella said. “I would be positively surprised that we are in condition to compete with Ferrari for podiums. We have seen progress this weekend, so definitely we will be there. It’s also racing, anything can happen.”
McLaren’s strategy and focus on upgrades
Despite the cautious tone, the former Ferrari team member highlighted McLaren’s ongoing development efforts and strategic focus. The team plans to push for the podium tomorrow, while also using the Japanese GP as an opportunity to identify improvements for upcoming races.
“We will have a go at the podium, but we know we need to improve the car, and, above all, bring some upgrades. That’s the plan for the following race,” Stella explained. “Then, we can more steadily fight for the podium, and hopefully later in the season, the victory.”
Outlook for the Japanese GP
With Oscar Piastri in third on the grid and Lando Norris in fifth, McLaren is in a strong position to capitalize on any opportunities that arise during the race. However, Ferrari’s pace and the unpredictable nature of Suzuka suggest that podium battles will be closely contested. Andrea Stella’s comments reflect a realistic approach, acknowledging both McLaren’s progress and the challenge of competing against a Ferrari team that has regained momentum.
The Japanese Grand Prix promises to be a crucial test for Ferrari and McLaren as they aim to convert qualifying positions into race results and continue their development toward potential victories later in the season.
