The Turkish Grand Prix celebrated the success of Valtteri Bottas’ Mercedes but, at the same time, it was also the scene of a mission not entirely fulfilled by the German team. All this due to the fifth place of Lewis Hamilton, a final result that cost him first place in the 2021 Formula 1 world championship standings, with the lead back again in the hands of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, as Formula 1 will head for Austin in two weeks’ time, when the United States Grand Prix is scheduled to take place.

Mercedes F1 team boss, Toto Wolff, first discussed the events which took place in the Turkish Grand Prix, responding to the criticism of Lewis Hamilton who did not agree with the team’s decision to change the old intermediate tyres, as the British driver felt he could go to the end and achieve a better result, a scenario that was denied by the Mercedes Team Principal.

Later, Toto Wolff explained that he enjoyed to see Scuderia Ferrari being able to once again keep up with Mercedes and Red Bull, as the Maranello team even believed it could have a chance of winning the race at a certain moment. The Mercedes Team Principal added that next season he would like to see other teams join the fight with Mercedes and Red Bull for race wins:

“I like that Ferrari is able to go much faster than before, it has a fast car now – added Wolff about the competition – I hope that next year there are more than two teams that can fight for wins. Reliability is the most important aspect to win the title. If you withdraw and the other wins, there is a 25 point difference. You have to do the best you can every day, every weekend. This is the formula for winning. This is certainly the most complicated championship. Today we are six points behind Verstappen. If this continues, it may be that whoever wins in Abu Dhabi will also win the title. I like this fight with Red Bull, every weekend is important, but I can still sleep very well. Let’s remember that this is just sport, and Formula 1 in particular. There are always question marks about reliability – he concluded – let’s just hope to be able to arrive safely until the end of the season like this, but I’m not sure” – he concluded.
