Haas is fast becoming “the Ferrari B team” of Formula 1, as confirmed by Mick Schumacher, the most prominent and famous of junior from the Maranello team’s Academy and son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher.
Mick was given the opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut this season, but as expected the young German driver could not show his full potential in the Ferrari-powered Haas, who is by far the slowest team in the 2021 championship. The American outfit has truly struggled this season after the decision not to develop this year’s car and basically use the 2020 car for the entire championship.
However, Haas is confident it can target fighting for a midfield place next season, also thanks to a new and deeper collaboration with Ferrari, which includes a special design facility on the grounds at Maranello:
“The goal is being in Q2 regularly, the wish is Q3” – Mick Schumacher said, ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix. And while Mick is trying to do his best for Haas, he admits that at the same time he is trying to impress his Ferrari boss, Mattia Binotto:
“What I hear is that everyone at Ferrari is happy with what I’ve shown so far. But I also realise that I have to take the next step next year.” – he said, as reported by Sport1
There are high hopes for the 2022 Haas car, taking into consideration the fact that the team has been working on it for longer than most of the other teams in pitlane. When asked about Haas’ new facility at Maranello, Mick Schumacher explained: “That’s right. We’re practically the Ferrari B team now, where the Ferrari juniors like me can drive. In Maranello we also now have the opportunity to work in Ferrari’s wind tunnel. That will be an advantage.” – the German driver concluded.
