Max Verstappen’s future has once again become one of the hottest topics in the Formula 1 paddock, with growing speculation suggesting the reigning world champion could eventually move away from Red Bull. While much of the discussion has focused on a possible switch to McLaren, the biggest long-term consequence of such a move may actually be felt at Ferrari.
At first glance, Ferrari appear to have little involvement in the ongoing rumours surrounding Max Verstappen. However, if the Dutch driver were to leave Red Bull, the resulting driver market domino effect could place one of Ferrari’s most valuable young prospects firmly in the sights of one of its biggest rivals.
That prospect is Oliver Bearman, the British youngster who remains one of the Scuderia’s brightest hopes for the future.
McLaren speculation could trigger a wider Formula 1 driver market reshuffle
Recent reports have linked Max Verstappen with McLaren as frustration continues to grow over Red Bull’s declining competitiveness. After dominating Formula 1 for several seasons, the Milton Keynes-based outfit has endured a far more difficult campaign, leading to increasing speculation over whether Max Verstappen will eventually seek a new challenge.
Adding further intrigue to the situation is the expected arrival of long-time race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase at McLaren in 2028. Given the exceptionally successful working relationship between the two, many observers believe Max Verstappen could be tempted to reunite with the engineer who has played such an important role throughout his Formula 1 career.
At this stage, there is no concrete evidence that a move to McLaren is imminent. Nevertheless, persistent rumours surrounding Max Verstappen’s future continue to fuel discussion throughout the paddock, with several teams closely monitoring developments.
Should Red Bull ultimately lose its star driver, replacing a four-time world champion would immediately become one of the team’s highest priorities.
Oliver Bearman reportedly emerges as a Red Bull candidate
According to recent reports, Red Bull have already started evaluating potential successors should Max Verstappen decide to leave. Among the names believed to be attracting serious attention is Oliver Bearman.
The young British driver has been regarded as one of Ferrari’s most promising academy graduates for several years. His reputation grew significantly after making an impressive Formula 1 debut for Ferrari during the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where he stepped in at short notice to replace Carlos Sainz and immediately demonstrated remarkable composure and maturity under immense pressure.
Recognising his enormous potential, the Italian side carefully mapped out Oliver Bearman’s development pathway. Through its close technical partnership with Haas, the Scuderia secured the youngster a full-time Formula 1 seat beginning in 2025, allowing him to gain valuable race experience without the pressure of immediately joining Ferrari’s senior team.
The long-term objective appeared straightforward: allow Oliver Bearman to mature at Haas before eventually promoting him to Ferrari when the right opportunity became available.
Lewis Hamilton’s performances have complicated Ferrari’s long-term plans
Ferrari’s long-term driver strategy has become considerably more complex over the past year.
When Lewis Hamilton joined the Scuderia, many expected the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion to spend the final years of his career helping Ferrari return to championship-winning form before eventually making way for the next generation.
Instead, Lewis Hamilton has produced increasingly impressive performances during the 2026 season. After a challenging adaptation period, the British driver has rediscovered race-winning form, collected multiple podium finishes and moved ahead of Charles Leclerc in the Drivers’ Championship.
At the same time, Charles Leclerc remains one of the fastest and most highly regarded drivers on the Formula 1 grid. The Monegasque continues to be viewed as a cornerstone of Ferrari’s future, making it difficult to imagine the Scuderia replacing either of its current stars in the near future.
As a result, Oliver Bearman’s path toward a Maranello race seat has become significantly less clear than originally anticipated.
Red Bull could offer what Ferrari currently cannot
This uncertainty creates a potentially attractive opportunity for Red Bull.
If Max Verstappen departs, Red Bull would suddenly have a vacancy at one of Formula 1’s leading teams. Such an opportunity could prove extremely appealing to a young driver eager to establish himself among the sport’s elite.
Unlike Ferrari, whose current driver pairing appears secure for the foreseeable future, Red Bull may be able to offer Oliver Bearman something the Italian team simply cannot—a realistic chance to step into a front-running car as early as the 2027 season.
From Oliver Bearman’s perspective, the proposal would inevitably deserve serious consideration. Every young Formula 1 driver dreams of competing for victories and championships as quickly as possible, and an immediate opportunity with Red Bull could accelerate that ambition.
Ferrari cannot afford to lose one of its biggest prospects
For the Italian side, allowing Oliver Bearman to slip away would represent far more than simply losing a talented young driver.
The Scuderia has invested years in his development through the Ferrari Driver Academy, carefully overseeing every stage of his progression from junior categories to Formula 1. Watching one of its own academy graduates become a race winner—or even a future world champion—with a direct rival would be a significant setback for Ferrari’s long-term planning.
History has repeatedly shown the importance of retaining elite young talent before competitors have the chance to intervene. In today’s Formula 1 environment, securing future stars has become almost as important as developing a competitive car.
Why Ferrari must reassure Oliver Bearman
Rather than allowing uncertainty to grow, Ferrari may need to act proactively and reinforce its commitment to Oliver Bearman’s future.
Keeping him at Haas for another season or two could ultimately prove the most beneficial route for both parties. The American team continues to provide an excellent environment for a young driver to develop racecraft, improve technical understanding and gain valuable Formula 1 experience without the constant pressure that accompanies racing for Ferrari.
There is also another important consideration.
Although Red Bull remains one of Formula 1’s leading organisations, recent seasons have raised legitimate questions about its long-term trajectory. Changes within the technical department, increased competition from rival teams and uncertainty surrounding future regulations mean joining Red Bull may not necessarily represent the guaranteed path to championships that it once appeared to be.
Ferrari therefore has every reason to reassure Oliver Bearman that patience could ultimately deliver greater rewards. If the Scuderia can continue building a championship-winning package around Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton while maintaining confidence in its young academy graduate, the British driver may eventually receive the Ferrari opportunity he has been working towards throughout his career.
Whether Max Verstappen remains at Red Bull, joins McLaren or chooses another destination entirely, one thing appears increasingly clear: the Dutchman’s next career move could reshape far more than one team’s future. It may also determine whether Ferrari succeeds in keeping hold of one of the brightest talents it has produced in recent years.
