Charles Leclerc and Jules Bianchi are connected by their passion for Ferrari and extraordinary talent. These were the heartfelt words shared by Massimo Rivola, a former Ferrari executive.
Anyone familiar with Charles Leclerc’s Formula 1 career—and his life off-track—knows how significant Jules Bianchi was for him and his path to Ferrari. Both shared a deep love for the Scuderia, although unfortunately, Jules never got the chance to race for the team he adored. After the tragic accident that claimed Bianchi’s life, another young talent stepped in. Charles quickly captured the hearts of Ferrari fans, much like Jules had begun to do before him.
The two seem connected by an invisible thread, with many striking similarities. It was actually Bianchi who recommended Leclerc to Ferrari, helping him join the Ferrari Driver Academy. As his mentor, Charles has never hidden his admiration for the French driver, taken from the world too soon. Early on, some even confused Charles with Jules because of their similarities.
Massimo Rivola’s emotional words
During a guest appearance on the podcast Cappuccio e Brioche, Massimo Rivola, former head of the Ferrari Driver Academy, shared his early experiences with Leclerc and his remarkable similarities to Bianchi. “Charles? At first, I often called him Jules by mistake,” the Italian began, “and I kept getting it wrong. For me, they were the same person.” Massimo Rivola highlighted their likenesses, noting, “He had the same movements, he spoke like him.”
Massimo Rivola also recounted how Charles Leclerc joined the Ferrari Driver Academy, where Jules Bianchi played a crucial role. “Nicolas Todt was already pushing to get him into the Academy. But his name also circulated thanks to Jules.” Massimo Rivola shared that Bianchi would often say to him, “There’s this friend of mine in karting—he’s phenomenal.”
Massimo Rivola’s first contract with Ferrari was for Charles Leclerc, yet in his mind, Bianchi remained present. Their bond remains indelible, with lingering regrets that Leclerc and Bianchi never got to share their ultimate dream together: racing side by side in a Ferrari F1 car.
These reflections from a key figure in Ferrari’s talent development program highlight the enduring legacy of Jules Bianchi within Maranello. His eye for talent helped unearth one of the Scuderia’s modern stars, while the parallels between the pair continue to evoke powerful emotions among those who knew them both. As Charles Leclerc carries the Ferrari flag into the 2026 regulation era, stories like Massimo Rivola’s serve as a reminder of the human connections that define the sport’s most poignant chapters.
