Monte Carlo is finally tinged with red. After years of unsuccessful attempts, Charles Leclerc conquers his Monaco race and closes the gap on Max Verstappen in the championship: let’s discover the front pages of the Italian newspapers on the Monday after the Monte Carlo Grand Prix.
Unrestrained joy with tears that blurred the vision in the last kilometers of the race. An exhausting race, lasting 78 laps and seasoned first by the red flag, then by a phlegmatic waltz among the barriers of the Principality. It was not a particularly sparkling race in Monte Carlo, but tension certainly did not lack. The pitfalls on the historic Monaco track are always around the corner, especially when he is in the lead, the home favorite, Charles Leclerc.
But this time, misfortune couldn’t do anything. Yet misfortune had tried to put a stick in the wheels of “King Charles I” – as renamed by Tuttosport. It had tried before qualifying when it forced Ferrari to replace the engine on Charles’ car. It had tried again in Q1, showing itself in the form of a plastic bag before reappearing on Sunday playing the Red Flag card. But Monaco 2024 had to belong to Ferrari, had to belong to Charles Leclerc, to that boy who grew up on the Riviera alongside the unforgettable Hervé and Jules with the dream of triumphing on that magical as well as anachronistic track that has written the history of Formula 1.
Charles Leclerc triumphs in Monaco and makes the last Sunday of May very sweet for himself and Ferrari. Those in Monte Carlo are not “just” 25 points in the championship, but represent a huge boost of confidence for a championship that seems truly poised to reopen. Red Bull no longer dominates, Ferrari and McLaren have now gained the wake of the Austrian team, and looking at the standings, Charles Leclerc is not so far from Max, nor is Ferrari from Red Bull.
A very sweet Monegasque Sunday, Italian newspapers in raptures. On the front pages of the newspapers, Charles Leclerc’s feat in Monaco dominates, accompanied by the other major events of Sunday, May 26th: the closing of the Giro d’Italia with the victory of the amazing pink jersey of Tadej Pogačar and the victory of “Pecco” Bagnaia’s red Ducati in Catalonia.

Let’s start with La Gazzetta dello Sport. The Italian newspaper celebrates Charles Leclerc and Pogačar: “Phenomena,” it headlines. There is also a small space for Ducati rider Bagnaia. More stately is the Corriere dello Sport, which renames Leclerc “Charles LeRoi”. “Leclerc’s walk, the Red team wins again in the Principality after 7 years, for Maranello it’s the tenth time in history.” There is also space for Carlos Sainz’s podium and for MotoGP.
From “LeRoi” to “King Charles I”. Different name, but the scope is the same on the front page of Tuttosport. “Finally triumphs in his Monte Carlo. Master from start to finish […] and dives into the sea.” The Turin-based newspaper recalls the dedication to his father and the team before also praising a Bagnaia who “delights on the bewitched track”.
Finally, a look from across the Alps. L’Équipe dedicates an entire front page to Charles Leclerc, that “Charles de Monaco” who “broke the curse”.
