At 6:00 PM in Abu Dhabi, the curtain fell on the 2023 Formula 1 season. The last day of testing, as tradition dictates, saw all twenty drivers on the track in the afternoon session simulating qualifying in the final hour of activity, with the track at its coolest. In the first twenty minutes, there were many improvements, including Esteban Ocon’s (1’24″393), which was later confirmed as the fastest lap of the day, and Pato O’Ward’s (1’24″662). Both returned to the track in the closing moments but failed to lower their respective times despite the improved track conditions.
The session was interrupted thirty-eight minutes from the checkered flag due to a power unit problem with Iwasa, which stranded the AlphaTauri near the pit entry. The green light returned after seventeen minutes, and all drivers returned to the track for the final runs on the C5 tires, the softest in the Pirelli range. The last driver to improve his time under the checkered flag was Frederic Vesti, managing to surpass Sergio Perez just in time. The time set in the morning by Carlos Sainz confirmed itself as the fifth fastest overall, ahead of Fernando Alonso, Jack Doohan, and Robert Shwartzman. The Ferrari test driver concluded a very intense day, covering 123 laps.
