In recent years, Formula 1 in Monaco has become a parade for the cars, especially during Sunday’s race. A race where only unforeseen events can create excitement and shake things up. While Sundays are the highlight of other weekends, for Monaco, the story is different with Saturday being the most exciting part. To try to bring excitement back to Monaco, Lewis Hamilton has suggested that F1 experiment with the weekend format.
During the press conference held in the Mercedes Hospitality area, future Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton addressed several topics ahead of the weekend. Being in the principality, most of the words were in favor of the historic event. The event in Monte Carlo is nearing its 100th year of existence, with the anniversary coming in 2029. An event that is still appreciated despite the difficulties in moving and racing. What maintains the value of this track is the driving experience just a few centimeters from the walls, a challenge that maximizes the drivers’ skills.
Everything focuses on the qualifying session, where the driver makes the difference. The desire to get closer and closer to the limit allows them to excel more than on any other circuit on the calendar. However, the lack of excitement on Sunday has led to some reflection on the possibility of changing something to increase the spectacle.
“Monaco continues to be Monaco, it hasn’t changed much,” Lewis Hamilton responded during the media session. “The cars are getting bigger and it’s not possible to overtake in the pits without risking a collision. I wish the roads were bigger and the track wider, but I don’t think that will ever be the case for Monaco because it’s a small place.” – the future Ferrari driver continued.
After this impractical proposal, Lewis Hamilton suggested something that could be considered.
“Maybe having special tires for this race, so we have more pit stops, would create more variability. They can definitely propose a specific weekend, like the sprint weekend they’ve added, but for this particular weekend, I think they should propose a new formula rather than the same one. Don’t you fall asleep on Sunday watching the race? Yes, then create something different somehow, I don’t know how it can be done.” – the British driver concluded ahead of the 2024 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix.
