From Friday struggles to a Q3 revival: Hamilton masterpiece as Ferrari engineers transform the SF-26
After an extremely difficult Friday, Lewis Hamilton emerged as one of the biggest surprises of qualifying in Barcelona, securing a front-row start for Ferrari.
Ferrari’s benchmark driver
Right now, Lewis Hamilton is Ferrari’s reference point. After the enormous difficulties he faced last season and a challenging start to the current campaign, the British driver is now putting together one impressive result after another.
Q3 in Barcelona perfectly illustrated the contrasting fortunes of Ferrari’s two drivers. While Charles Leclerc crashed his SF-26 into the barriers, Lewis Hamilton produced an almost perfect lap that earned him a place on the front row of the grid. He qualified ahead of Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes and finished just a handful of thousandths of a second behind George Russell’s pole-winning Mercedes.
The story behind the turnaround after FP3
Yet the weekend had started in the worst possible way for the seven-time world champion. Lewis Hamilton appeared to be struggling significantly throughout Friday and continued to look uncomfortable during Saturday morning’s FP3 session.
However, something changed between the final practice session and qualifying. Speaking during the post-session press conference, Lewis Hamilton praised the team’s efforts and revealed an interesting behind-the-scenes story about what happened before qualifying: “Yesterday I couldn’t believe the gap was so big and all weekend I kept asking myself: why am I half a second slower? I was losing time pretty much everywhere,” Lewis Hamilton explained to reporters. “I was struggling in Turn 3, I was struggling in Turn 9, and I was losing confidence.”
The Ferrari driver then credited the team for helping him find a solution at the crucial moment.
“The engineers did a fantastic job with some small setup changes,” added the seven-time world champion, before revealing an unusual detail about his preparation. “For the first time ever, I actually left the circuit between the end of FP3 and qualifying. I thought: I need to get away from here.”
“I went back to my motorhome. I was still on the phone with the engineers, speaking only through my mobile. But I went somewhere that allowed me to reset mentally. Then I came back and somehow managed to recover. So yes, whatever it was, it worked.”
The result was one of Lewis Hamilton’s strongest qualifying performances since joining Ferrari. After looking far from competitive throughout much of the weekend, the British driver and the Ferrari engineers found the right direction at exactly the right moment, allowing him to challenge for pole position and secure a front-row start for the Spanish Grand Prix.
